So the thing that everyone said was going to happen happened, and at least 129 people have been reported to have caught #COVID19AB at the Calgary Stampede SO FAR... 1/
Despite rapid testing onsite & assertions that all precautions were being followed, AB has 129 new cases of #COVID19AB because the government went ahead with a big event despite medical experts warning it was too soon. 2/
And now the gov'nt wants to do away with all precautions, including isolation requirements, timely testing & the contact tracing that told us where these infections occurred—again despite all medical evidence showing it's too soon! 3/ friendsofmedicare.org/enough_is_enou…
If folks had been encouraged to isolate instead of attending the Stampede, if we had robust contact tracing, 129 Albertans might not have #COVID19AB right now. But instead the gov't is recklessly putting us all at further risk. 4/
The fact is: Only 57% of Albertans are fully vaccinated, lagging behind many other provinces, & kids 12 and under are still ineligible for vaccine so are completely unprotected... 5/ health-infobase.canada.ca/covid-19/vacci…
...while #COVID19AB & esp. Delta variant rates are by far the highest in Can.! We're in no position to let our guard down. We're not calling for increased restrictions, but to keep in place the most basic & necessary evidence-based protective measures. 6/ health-infobase.canada.ca/covid-19/epide…
We all want #COVID19AB to be over, but throwing all caution to the wind now will only amount to more death & suffering for Albertans. We need policy decisions based on the best medical evidence, not political whims. 7/
We must continue to #TestTraceIsolateAB instead of putting children, other unvaxed Albertans, & immunocompromised people at needless risk!
Measures will be lifted Aug. 16 unless we take action now! Here's how to help:👇 8/

Yesterday, AHS released an RFP for expanded orthopedic procedures in chartered surgical facilities. Privatization of our health care has become par for the course from the AB government, but let’s break this down again anyways🧵1/21 alberta.ca/release.cfm?xI…
As per the Alberta Surgical Initiative, the gov't plans to reduce wait times by contracting out all sorts of surgical services to private facilities. It's modeled after the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative which the gov't has repeatedly praised, but which ultimately failed! 2/21
The SK gov’t spent $176M on private surgical facilities in 2009-2014, +$60.5M on operating costs. While wait times initially lowered, since gov't funding slowed, wait times have steadily climbed. By 2018, some of SK’s waits were again worse than AB’s. 3/21 globalnews.ca/news/4151204/1…
