The worst premier Alberta has ever had says ‘We must learn to live with covid. Simple as that.’ Like it’s no big deal. Like thousands of Albertans didn’t die from it. Like even more Albertans are not living with long term, possibly permanent, adverse health effects from it. 1/14
What he means by ‘learn to live with it’ is starting next week, by the end of August, you will have no idea what kind of risk you or your unvaccinated children are facing, wherever you go in Alberta. You can’t find out if you have covid. You can’t get a test for it. No one 2/14
has to stay home from work or anywhere else. You won’t hear if any of your co-workers, family or friends have it. They won’t know, but also, no one from AHS would contact you. You won’t know if you are walking into a business or restaurant where possibly the entire staff 3/14
handling your food, cutting your hair, cleaning your teeth, checking your eyes, providing physiotherapy, looking after your kids, giving you an Uber ride, or anything else, has covid. They won’t know either. Their co-worker with sniffles? Maybe it’s just a cold. Maybe not 🤷♀️ 4/14
Or, if you go into a restaurant or a movie theatre, or a concert, the guy who coughed in the seat behind you or beside you? Maybe just a tickle in his throat. Maybe not 🤷♀️ Maybe his roommate at home just has a cold. Maybe he has covid. No one will know. 5/
Until someone is on the way to the hospital. The anti-vaxxers out there who have scoffed at all health measures all along—in this scenario, you’re ALL going to get covid. The Delta variant is as contagious as chicken pox. We had nearly 400 cases a day the past 2 days, 6/14
and that is doubling in about a week now. So, by the time we are cut off from testing numbers, that will be 700-800 cases a day. Next week. And those are only the cases we know about, because already they have stopped letting people with no symptoms get tested, 7/14
even if they are a close contact of someone who has covid.
We’ll have 1000s of new cases per day before August is over. Even if the numbers are hidden and even if Dr. Hinshaw and UCP are denying it. That’s how exponential growth works. 8/14
There are 1.5 MILLION Albertans who haven’t been vaccinated at all who could easily catch this. And those of us who are vaccinated—we can catch it too. We might not get as sick as you anti-vaxxers will be, but we can pass the virus we catch along to you. Or your kids. 9/14
Or our own kids. Alberta is not exceptional. This is coming. This is what Kenney, Shandro & Hinshaw want us all to ‘live with, simple as that’. Are you okay with the idea that you might have no idea you caught or were likely to catch covid until your symptoms 10/14
decline to the point were you need to be hospitalized? No idea which places to stay away from until it’s too late? There are no health benefits in living like this. No credible medical expert anywhere says it’s a good idea to do this right now. 11/14
They’re doing this to blur all the lines so we can’t get a clear picture of what opening for Stampede actually did. In a matter of days (if not already) it will be impossible to trace any case back to someone who caught it at Nashville North or in a bar on 17th Ave. 12/14
The one thing Kenney has done consistently is make sure there is someone else he can blame. Probably most of the people who got through this thread know all this and already agree with me. I don’t know if anything can change obstinate minds so hellbent on destroying us all. 13/14
But—maybe this will get through to someone, somehow. We will have to learn to ‘live with covid’, but expecting people to do that while flying blind and having no data or basic health measures is only going to lead to tragedy. Simple as that. 14/14

Ottawa: Here is some money to create an affordable childcare program in your province. You need to chip in some $, it has to be widely available, and should cost about $10/day
Manitoba, BC, Yukon, Quebec, NL, NS, and PEI: Great! Thanks!
UCP: Can we just have the money?
1/5
Ottawa: No, you have to follow the rules.
UCP: That’s not fair!
Ottawa: It is fair. It’s the same basic rules for everyone.
UCP: Quebec is getting a special deal! You like them better than you like us!!!
2/5
Ottawa:
UCP: Give us the money with no strings attached!
Ottawa: No. That’s not how it works.
UCP: Alberta is special. We need to spend the money our own way. Don’t you trust us to do that??
To those who have been out at the rallies & protests: thank you. I’m sorry to hear you have had to put up with the confrontational anti-maskers and covidiots. Remember—their noise & vitriol is a sure sign of desperation. They are wrong. They have NOTHING to stand on. 1/6
They are deluded. And in some cases, they are evil to want to subject our children and their OWN children to what we see happening with this Delta variant everywhere else. Alberta is not exceptional and we will not avoid this. The reasons UCP has given us for abandoning 2/6
all basic public health protocols are lies and we all know it. They are covering up their own huge gamble and loss in having the Stampede open the way it did. All they have left is to hide the evidence of their incompetence and prevail upon their useful, brainwashed idiots to 3/6
One question I’ve seen Dr. Hinshaw persistently sidestep is whether she presented any *other* plans in that July 8 cabinet meeting. Was this debacle-in-the-making the *only* plan? That date seems so significant. It was the *lowest* new cases and + test % in months or since. 1/4
It was one week past the July 1 ‘opening’—so before the 10-14 days when the cases would start rising as a result, with the added ‘cushion’ of the kids having been out of school for 12 days. AND it was the day before Stampede started. Very calculated. 2/4
So, again, is what we’re facing now the ONLY plan they discussed on that day? Or is this the ‘let’s call it over, no matter what happens’ plan? Or the ‘how do we cover if Stampede ends up being a super spreader’ version? And… 3/4
For people wondering what ‘science’ Hinshaw was looking at to make this latest covid gamble, let’s review:
—doctors implored them in early November to do a short ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown. Kenney hid at home, they ignored it, and they still had to impose restricitons 1/6
in late November. They torpedoed Christmas retail and restaurant seasons while UCP staff & MLAs jetted off on vacations.
—in March, they were again cautioned that there would be a 3rd wave, they again ignored all advice, and again had to back down and impose restrictions. 2/6
Kenney had to close the #ableg to avoid answering questions about that.
—When they declared ‘open for summer’, they ignored all advice to go more gradually, or that the Stampede could be a super spreader, and bulldozed ahead. 3/6
I don’t want to see anyone get suffer or die from covid, but I do have a wish list of things I’d like to see happen as a result of or complement to today’s dangerously reckless health announcements:
—companies considering investing/relocating here change their minds 1/4
—Albertans ‘managing their own risks’ by staying away from non-essential businesses with no covid protocols in droves.
—UCP supporters letting Kenney and the gang know they have lost their support for good
—Kenney confronted about this EVERYWHERE he goes or speaks 2/4
—other provinces closing their borders to Albertans
—UCP’s fundraising efforts to be absolutely decimated
—schools to develop their OWN protocols, including masking for students
—worldwide mocking and derision of Kenney and UCP, as they deserve 3/4
We expected it and everyone else’s numbers are up too. It’s the people who aren’t vaccinated. We need more people vaccinated. Who’s surprised?
The “threat is shifting” Hinshaw says. The rising case numbers have “caused some anxiety”. Could she be any more of an automaton?
Hinshaw says “Today we are in a very different place.” We have to weigh the impacts of interventions, she says. In other words, UCP doesn’t want to do anything about this wave. We’re on our own.
