A Chinese ink and brush painting thread on the birds of the Indian Subcontinent... All the inkwork is by yours truly of course! 1. Sarus cranes, the tallest of the flying birds a symbol of marital fidelity
Chalat musafir moh Liya re pinjre wali muniya!..... More enchanting( mohifying) when free ! 2. Red Avadavat or the Red Munia
My favouritest of the 'common birds' from the subcontinent , endearing chatterboxes😊 3. Red -whiskered Bulbul
Always a delight to spot these flashes of yellow in the green tree foliage 4. Black- naped Oriole
The metronome birdie..... The 'bambai ka bird'( named the official bird of Mumbai city in 2011 )
5. Coppersmith Barbet this one is a scroll painting so click on pic to see the whole picture 🤷♀️ #indiaves#birdpainting#birding
Going by the first pic on this thread which depicts the mating dance of the Sarus, you may be forgiven for mistaking this to be a mating pair too (if you are not a birder i.e), but actually these are two morphs of the male of the species 7. Indian paradise flycatcher #indiaves
A solitary 'sundara' for a change 8. Rufous-bellied Niltava
Now for some breeding finery!
9.Intermediate Egret
A lil feathered family for this Tuesday morning....I painted the painted ones!
Companion piece to the above , featuring a bird known for its peculiar nesting behaviour ,that is the state bird of my Home state as well of the state I am currently residing in
11. Great Hornbill
The smallest of the cranes ,A bird named for its delicate appearance, yet one that undertakes one of the toughest migrations in the world crossing the Himalayas. 12. Demoiselle Crane #Birdpainting#inkandbrushpainting#birding#IndiAves
After a bird named by Royalty...its Common cousin 😊
13. Common crane
And one of the most vulnerable and least 'known' of them all 14. Black- necked Crane
This has been painted on unsized rice paper in the traditional 'xieyi' style , which is supposed to catch the spirit of the subject (well that is all you get time for anyways! 😬) #indiaves
Now for a bird that is not just great in the looks department but at vocalizations too! A great mimic
Finally it has rained in the cloud forests of this part of the country after a prolonged summer spell!..One of the denizen of these forests, with an orchid blossom from the region 😊
Commonly seen as part of Bird waves here.... restless Lil bullets hard to 'freeze frame' on them! 273. Golden Babbler(Stachyridopsis chrysaea) #Birding#BirdsofnortheastIndia#Indiaves
When I saw these guys on my Birding walk, ar first glance I thought it was the usual Grey Treepie because of the size and tail( It is dark and wet in the mornings here,in that Palm Grove in particular), then I heard the calls!
274.Long-tailed Sibia #BirdsSeenIn2022@IndiAves
53. Dug up this old thread, will continue some posts for #TitliTuesday on this to collate pics and info at one place

Couple of Rare Nymphalids now
54. Chocolate Jungle Queen ( Stichophthalma nourmahal )Even in a tattered state in the dark underbrush this one was a stunner( Well it does belong to the Morphinae subfamily, same as the stunning new world Morpho butterflies!) #butterfliesofIndia
On #NationalHandloomDay doing a thread of handlooms in my #gettymuseumchallenge painting recreations .... Starting with the home state 1. Kerala Kasavu( Balaramapuram) Saree/Mundum neriyathum
And four more painting recreations featuring that handloom weave #NationalHandloomDay
The before pic is from Holi exactly two years back... I had put on a lot of flab because of a meniscus injury...vicious cycle that, didn't know I could workout around that injury, hence gained that flab(pigging out in the jungle )which made it worse..after pic from a week back
What changed?.....There was this dancing event that was put up by the ladies of a station in Feb that year,I was also a part of it and that damn knee started bothering me again😑
Decided to do something about it....So on 6th March 2018 I started with Intermittent fasting and doing light bellydancing sessions at home that didn't tax the knee too much...about 2 months later wore some knee supports and took to the Badminton courts
The bird thread bought so much joy and sense of rediscovery....so starting a thread on one more gp of colourful evanescent winged creatures... 'hathon mein rang reh jaata he pankhon se jab chhodo toh'...1. Common Peacock(Papilio polyctor),from Rupa and sessa respectively
2. Indian TortoiseShell(Aglais caschmirensis)Rupa,Arunachal...pair of territorial pugnacious males in all probability....I have had a paper published on the range extension of this species along with a lycaenid species of butterfly here... threatenedtaxa.org/index.php/JoTT…
3. Common Map(Cyrestis thyodamas),Amlaghat,Uttaranchal....Its not common inspite of the common name😁.. and one look at it and you can guess at the origin of that name...does look like an old parchment map for buried treasure doesnt it?😁
Looking into photo archives for pics to go with the painting for the pinned tweet thread made me realise I should make a thread for one record shot of all the bird species I have taken...so here goes starting with one of our most colourful lil birds
1.Mrs Gould's sunbird
