First pictures of the damage caused by the explosion at #Eskom#Medupi Unit 4 last night:
I have it on reliable authority that there was an internal hydrogen explosion within the 800 MW generator of #Eskom#Medupi Unit 4, the ends of the generator have been blow off, the generator is destroyed, and it will have to be replaced. This is a massive setback.
The incident occurred during the activity to displace hydrogen with carbon dioxide and air respectively, for the purposes of finding an external leak.
The preliminary investigation indicates that while performing this activity air was introduced into the generator at a point where hydrogen was still present in the generator at sufficient quantities to create an explosive mixture, which ignited and resulted in the explosion.
It appears there was a deviation from the procedure for carrying out this activity. As such Eskom has undertaken to place those employees who were responsible to manage and execute this work under precautionary suspension pending the conclusion of the Major Event Investigation.
This is a great, easy-to-read and understand article which explains why typically all large generators around the world above about 50 MW are cooled using hydrogen gas. The generators at #Eskom#Medupi are 800 MW each. bit.ly/3fMlGNS

Three independent sources indicate that @necsa_Ltd board yesterday authorised chairman @DavidNi79646904 to seek approval of @Energy_ZA minister @GwedeMantashe1 to reappoint suspended & later dismissed former CEO Phumzile Tshelane as a consultant to NECSA on a 6 month contract.
@necsa_Ltd@DavidNi79646904@Energy_ZA@GwedeMantashe1 The short term consulting contract envisaged by the @necsa_Ltd board for dismissed former CEO Tshelane would be for about 6 months & his task would be to make progress on establishment of an SOE, Ketlaphela Pharmaceuticals, to manufacture ARV drugs in SA. bit.ly/2ZVELWy
#Koeberg#misinformation: So it turns out there was actually nothing wrong with cooling water pump that circulates sea-water to the condenser at Unit 1 in the tertiary water loop of @Eskom_SA's Koeberg nuclear power plant. And the pump did NOT have to be repaired after all.
@Eskom_SA In reality, there was nothing wrong with the pump. It tripped out as it should when there was a low water level in the suction inlet pit, caused by an ingress of marine life to the inlet drum screen, which tripped due to high torque, resulting in the low suction pit water level.
@Eskom_SA Even the tripping of 1 of the 3 sea water circulating pumps of Unit 1 should not have caused the reactor to shut down. But the heat exchanger on the Unit 1 condenser was due for maintenance and was not able to handle the secondary-side heat load with 1 of 3 pumps out of service.
An explosive letter on 17 Oct 2019 from the current @necsa_Ltd board to the Minerals & Energy Parliamentary Committee reveals new information relating to misuse of Necsa funds by the former Necsa board under fired former chairman Kelvin Kemm & suspended CEO Phumzile Tshelane.
@necsa_Ltd The letter reveals that SA nuclear corporation @necsa_Ltd has been making massive operating losses since 2014, which have deteriorated over the years, & has resulted in various ring-fenced funds being irregularly used to meet operating expenses, including salaries.
@necsa_Ltd For example, the letter says that in FY 2018/19, @necsa_Ltd raided R268m from the Safari LEU Spent Fuel Waste Disposal Fund meant for future disposal of spent nuclear fuel waste, in order to meet operating costs.
Following major problems that brought Medupi power station to its knees during the height of the loadshedding last week, Medupi power station manager Rudi van der Walt has been forced to step down and be replaced immediately, pending his departure from @Eskom_SA and SA shortly.
@Eskom_SA Other staff at Medupi have been dismissed by @Eskom_SA generation head Bheki Nxumalo for negligence in what Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer calls "consequence management" following a number of major problems at Medupi that contributed to the loadshedding last week.
@Eskom_SA A number of additional problems at Medupi power station have now been identified that have not been previously disclosed to the public by @Eskom_SA's management, while Medupi and Kusile are emerging as major threats to the adequacy of the power system to meet demand in SA.
After a lull of a few months, right now a band of xenophobic criminals is currently again illegally evicting the family of my domestic worker, her husband & 2 young girls from their home in Alexandra, dumping all their worldly possessions onto the street & stealing a lot of it.
Xenophobic criminals again on the rampage in Alexandra terrorising residents, illegally evicting them, maliciously damaging and stealing thir property, and driving them out of their homes, in a scam to take over their homes and sell them.

At a recent @Eskom_SA media briefing, the threat of environmental non-compliance & Eskom's inaction in this regard appears to have finally dawned on acting CEO Jabu Mabuza & COO Jan Oberholzer. Pressures from lenders, financiers, banks, courts & civil society are becoming brutal.
@Eskom_SA Jan Oberholzer seemed somewhat spooked by environmental threats & he castigated Eskom for failing to make progress since 2010 on compliance with the air quality minimum emission standards (MES) of SA. For 1st time, "Reduce Emissions" is added to Eskom's 9-point recovery plan.
@Eskom_SA Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer says Eskom non-compliance to
Atmospheric Emission
License limits could lead to a
short term risk of 4470 MW, and Eskom not implementing
emission retrofit projects
within committed timelines
could lead to medium term
risk of 9000 MW.
