At a recent @Eskom_SA media briefing, the threat of environmental non-compliance & Eskom's inaction in this regard appears to have finally dawned on acting CEO Jabu Mabuza & COO Jan Oberholzer. Pressures from lenders, financiers, banks, courts & civil society are becoming brutal.

@Eskom_SA Jan Oberholzer seemed somewhat spooked by environmental threats & he castigated Eskom for failing to make progress since 2010 on compliance with the air quality minimum emission standards (MES) of SA. For 1st time, "Reduce Emissions" is added to Eskom's 9-point recovery plan.

@Eskom_SA Eskom acknowledges that since 2010, when it was given 5 years by Dept of Environmental Affairs to comply with the air quality minimum emission standards (MES), Eskom did nothing, and failed to comply, and simply asked for a further 5 year extension till 2019.

@Eskom_SA Now it's 2019, & Eskom still did little & still fails to comply with SA air quality minimum emission standards (MES), & now wants further exemption from the MES. Eskom has failed to invest in air pollution compliance & now doesn't have the time or money (approx R300bn) to comply.

@Eskom_SA Environmental non-compliance now poses a huge threat to the financial sustainability of Eskom & security of supply in SA, as Eskom & govt come under brutal global global & local pressure from lenders, financial institutions, pension funds, banks, courts & civil society to act.
