We were warned years ago that when climate change began to make huge climate changes, global social unrest would descend many if not all nations into chaos. Wars, increased political extremism, battles for dominance. Attempts to control the economy. Wrangling for power.

That prediction was accurate. Apt.

The globe is currently in a battle (if not WW3 hybrid war) for control of assets, resources, power, wealth, influence, and for the right to determine world order.

Unpleasant news: for those wondering when this will end?

It won’t. There is no end in sight.

Not until the decision on how climate change, increased viral pandemics, rising sea levels, economic depression, what the source of energy will be and who is in power (world order) is resolved. That may not be in my lifetime.

The threat is existential. Let that sink in.

Every life form is at risk of extinction.

This is the new normal.

The past is gone. We lived there once. We can’t return. We must invent a new sustainable way to inhabit earth as a species or succumb.

But that also needs to be realistic, pragmatic, specific, evidenced and inclusive of the human species. It will involve participation, a lot of negotiating, compromise and sacrifice. By everyone. Starting with extremists. Who only want to claim survival and power for themselves.

We are subjected daily to an onslaught of cunning and deception that we have never witnessed as a nation or a species since WW2. The time to unite and obstruct extremism is now.

Your participation is a requirement for survival. It’s not a request, it’s a requirement.

Apathy is the enemy.

There can be no apathy when we face extermination and extinction. Panic doesn’t help either. So clear your head. Overwhelmed? Take a break.

We unite and use the legal mechanisms we have to move forward, or we don’t.

But this is the new normal.

The nightmare we are living right now.

It’s unpleasant. Exhausting. Frustrating. Overwhelming.

None of that matters.

Wishing it will stop won’t make it go away.

Extremism ensures a constant state of stress. So learn to cope.

Climate change is a real existential threat to every human being. And many seek to use chaos to their advantage to survive at others’ expense. That “other” may be you. So don’t “other” people.

We need to restore some semblance of order & obstruct those who cause chaos.

We cannot panic or give up in despair. The panicked won’t survive. There are those who want riot & attempted coups to increase their odds of survival. Some of them have political power. Left & right.

Attacks on reality are only going to get worse from here on.

We saw what a weak majority & minority govt means. It means constant opposition obstructionism, chaos and ultimately failure to develop adequate policy for climate change or anything else. It exacerbates conflict.

If you don’t vote strategically, you’re condemning yourself and everyone else to failure. We need a strong majority to address these problems head on. Even with a strong majority it will be difficult.

Use every critical thinking skill you have to examine the evidence. Then make your choice on who can continue to deliver some stability and order, and who creates the disorder and chaos by using demagogic populist rhetoric, false scandals and egregious accusations.

Who has a detailed step by step plan to address climate action, a legal framework sanctioned by the Supreme Court of Canada, & the authority and temperament to make tough decisions?

Who has the legitimate power to redistribute wealth, experienced experts and professionals to assist to do the job and the unlucky experience to surviving toxic opposition smears and character assassination campaigns?

We need opposition. So this plea is not to refrain from voting for a party other than LPC. But make a strategic decision. Choose the candidate who has the best opportunity to block the far right extremists. We need opposition that doesn’t play parlour games and political theatre.

We have less than 10 years (probably closer to 5 years) to put climate changes in place and get the momentum rolling.

We DO NOT HAVE TIME TO START OVER FROM SCRATCH.

We need people to hit the ground running. Remember that.

Sorry if this hits you like a tons of bricks.

The real world is sometimes cold and lonely (or rather like hell at the moment with this current 33 degree smoky heatwave).

But it is also filled with beauty, inspiration and love. Things money can’t buy.

Our children & grandchildren deserve a chance to see that beauty again.

We had our opportunity. Provided to us by our forebears.

Now it’s our turn to secure the future from fascism. Failure is not an option.
