good morning from unceded Darug lands☀️today on #Insiders are murdoch politics editor Samantha Maiden, ABC politics editor Andrew Probyn and 9fax (AFR) columnist Jennifer Hewett. The interview is with shadow industrial relations minister Tony Burke. I block snitch taggers.
the “NSW delta outbreak” has put the whole state into lockdown. #Insiders
Sydney rules tightened, says Speers. Delta in the regions, reaching “Indigenous communities with very low rates of vaccination”. #Insiders
even the nations capital is in lockdown. The montage is clip after clip of politicians and journalists saying lockdown lockdown lockdown. Deranged and dangerous claims made by the member for Dawson in the parliament are broadcast on the public broadcaster #Insiders
clip of Berejiklian saying “we have got to be real about delta”, repeatedly. #Insiders
#MakingNews the papers are leading with statewide lockdown in NSW and the “chaos surrounding the decision” yesterday. #Insiders
the obligatory disembodied “concern” for “Indigenous communities”. Words words words. #MakingNews #Insiders
#TheCurve Briggs editorialises that the NSW government has clearly worked out the “brutal rules” of exponential maths. #Insiders he says the NSW wave has a long way to run. NSW not yet at the same stage as when stage 4 was imposed in Vic.
the big difference [in NSW today from Vic 2020] is vaccinations, says Briggs. #Insiders a lot of work to be done in Vic to bring the curve down, he says. Vax rates have surged - easier for young people to get vaccinated now.
Berejiklian has reversed course on many things, Speers editorialises. She didn’t want the state wide lockdown, military, or the 5km limit. Will she now reverse on her 50% talk? (A: she already has) #Insiders
panel. Maiden says an hour after the 11am briefing yesterday, Berejiklian received sewerage results. Claims that Morrison “urged her earlier in the week” to call a statewide lockdown. This was also the thinking of the Cth CMO, says Sam #Insiders
there is a pattern, including Fuller on calling in the troops, says Maiden. She says the police minister is not in the crisis cabinet meetings but Berejiklian’s press Secretary is. There will be calls for SOMEONE to resign. #Insiders
this is a shocking result in NSW, says Maiden. It seems she has been blindsided by the fact numbers are not going down, says Hewett (is so there is NO excuse - Ed) #Insiders
she was trying to use the construction industry as a model, says Hewett, re Berejiklian constantly presaging partial re-opening based on a moving feast of rates and doses #Insiders
“a necessary exercise in hope” says Probyn of the Berejiklian comms on double doses etc #Insiders he says there has been a lot of dithering. Speers adds the property inspection thing, you know, the white cultural practice.
there is no way they can get the cases down to zero, says Hewett. Particular concern is Indigenous communities, says Speers. He cites Burney on how to accelerate the rollout in Dubbo. ALL the new cases in Dubbo are Indigenous people. My god. #Insiders
guess what it is now spreading and Covid zero is dead, says Probyn. Other states are watching on in alarm and tightening their defences, says Speers, especially [WA Premier] McGowan. #Insiders
clip of McGowan saying vax certs are the first in Australia. The prime minister has backed that in, Soeers assured us. Phew. Hewett says the WA population will back home, which seems more to the point. #Insiders
he is not going to back down on zero covid when we get to 80% vax either, says Maiden of McGowan. He [Morrison] is not in charge of whether borders open at 80% she observes #Insiders
those who urged [NSW] not to lock down faster and harder, including the prime minister, should take responsibility for that, because people are dead - Maiden. #Insiders
vax passports exist, says Probyn, in the Medicare app which we should all download. He does not address the issues for refugees and others without access to Medicare #Insiders
will you need to show a vax passport if stopped on your way driving down the Hume? asks Speers. You will probably need it to cross the Nullarbor, says Probyn. #Insiders
interview. Burke says we can get into vax passport/ mandatory vax for certain industries discussions later, the current urgency is to get people vaccinated in the first place. #Insiders
indemnity. Burke says we need to keep the focus on health decisions. He points to the example of what Christensen said in the parliament. So you do not support indemnity, Speers push-polls. We support decisions based on health advice, says Burke. #Insiders
different rules from one state to another are already in place, we do not want different rules from one industry to another, says Burke. #Insiders
there is a huge frustration about the sickness, the restrictions, the deaths that would not have happened if they had locked down Bondi, says Burke, whose [federal] seat is half in Canterbury Bankstown #Insiders
he says something I was telling regional friends last night, that the government multilingual comms have been so bad that people have taken it up themselves - Arabic speaking doctors have produced their own materials, says Burke. #Insiders
concerns about military in those areas? Well yes. Burke says increasing numbers of small business owners have been in need of food parcels. The other thing is pop-up clinics, he says, mentions the Muslim Womens clinic #Insiders
pop up clinics work, says Burke. People see people they know and trust and it overcomes vax hesitancy. #Insiders
how do you think people in sw Sydney would respond to lifting restrictions in low case areas? Fury, says Burke. We are the home is essential workers. #Insiders
shadow minister for the arts role. During lockdown, the support is there, says Burke, but the problem is re-opening with social distancing. The other thing is insurance. The government has to insure arts events. #Insiders
gives example of Byron Bay Blues Fest. The message is you could be cancelled at any time and you can’t get insurance against that risk. The government has put insurance in place for the film industry but not live performance says Burke #Insiders
is the 2030 target ambitious enough? asks Speers, repeatedly. Burke moves around the need for a 2050 target a bit and Speers repeats the Q and they both dance a bit until it becomes pointless and it’s a wrap #Insiders
to some extent big business can look after itself but SMEs are on their own, claims Hewett. This is on vax in workplaces, indemnity and mandatory. Clip of Morrison duck-shoving both - right to sue on to business in the event of a state mandate/OH&S law #Insiders
it is really complicated, says Probyn. The safe work ombudsman advice is not law, says Maiden (?). Clip of Murphy asking about indemnity and mandate - this is still vax in workplaces - and Morrison saying “well there’s a presumption in the question” etc #Insiders
business want clarity and leadership, says Maiden. The waffling and double negatives from the prime minister makes her “very cross”. He is saying “don’t worry if someone dies you will not get sued” which is not good enough, says Maiden. What about Labor? asks Speers. #Insiders
small business are being hung out to dry, says Maiden. She extends the need for clarity - on vax and mandates - to schools, to teachers, inspiring an odd “I know your kids school… there are no nutters among [the teachers]” response from Speers. #Insiders
climate change. Clip of Zimmerman? Was it? Sorry, just going by voice. Will Morrison beef up the 26-8% target to take to Glasgow? Maiden says if we don’t we will get slapped by trade tariffs. Business is stepping in to show leadership, she says #Insiders
on the 2030 front we will see, says Speers. The prime minister is talking about a detailed plan and road map so we will await that.
⬆️verbatim Liberal Party comms.
#Insiders
Afghanistan. Probyn says we are going to send in planes to “extract people” working for NGOs, journos, they will be “scooped up”. It will be a dangerous mission, says Probyn. Biden is said to be sending in 5,000 troops. #Insiders
an unmitigated failure, according to Rudd, cites Speers. People are being targeted, slaughtered by the Taliban - women’s rights advocates, a moral and strategic failure… (all wholly predicted in 2003 by peace scholars and not-bought journos, analysts etc of course) #Insiders
Hewett agrees it is a moral failure, she says the US has responsibility but we are not off the hook, the Aust applications for interpreters to get out were so complex, we (Dutton) made it almost impossible for them to get accepted, says Hewett. #Insiders
#TalkingPictures not up yet
#FinalObservations 1 is Maiden saying the PM is about to do a press conference on Afghanistan and will add some vax comms. #Insiders
#FinalObservations 2 is Probyn saying 45 people have died since the PM announced the change in AZ advice “at that breathless press conference”. #Insiders
#FinalObservations 3 i missed the first part of her comment but Hewett adds we will have a better chance of spending Christmas in New York than in Perth #Insiders
we go out with a clip of Jacqui Lambie enjoying how she is depicted by cartoonists or something. Brand recognition critical for independents👍🏼 #Insiders
this has been another edition of watching #Insiders so you don’t have to👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼
tip jar here🙏🏼🙏🏼

Berejiklian is up. She starts with testing numbers and 415 new cases of community transmission. The lowest possible infectious in community figure is given, as usual. Stay home, get tested and isolate, she says.
the main suburbs of concern. She is acting completely business as usual. Food and to get vaccinated and that’s it, are reasons to leave home in Blacktown, Mt Druitt, Merrylands, Doonside.
a passing reference to “the deputy premier” and “regional NSW” and “our Indigenous communities” and she barrels onto thanking the prime minister for his extra dose announcement, 5 million doses, and bumper vax days for tradies.

the prime minister is up. He wants to thank Australians. He does this for a bit and then thanks *those Australians* who are complying with the NSW health orders.
not five minutes ago Anastasia Palasczuzk confirmed her governments response to the state-wide NSW lockdown. Now Scott Morrison has confirmed his support for the NSW state wide lockdown. The NSW Premier has not yet spoken on the NSW statewide lockdown.
a million doses of hope blah blah blah

not even 460+ new cases have distracted Berejiklian from her misleading announcements on wild cases. She tacked on a “likely to increase given some are still under investigation”, but still uses the lowest possible figure.
she says we have reached her 50% vaccinated target. No clarity on first or second dose. So misleading. Really dangerously dishonest.
and of course the official response is police, for compliance, because there are people doing the wrong thing and cause a “major major setback”. They are sending riot squad into Mt Druitt.

finally, a NSW government policy that will bend the curve downwards. Give it a week. This will work.
I mean my perspective is wholly western Sydney-centric - for the obvious reason lol - sending love to regional NSW - but ever since she unleashed it across high-density low-income insecurely-employed south west and western Sydney, this is where the thing HAS to be contained.
it hits me at odd moments, this lockdown. Joined my first union in 1985. Been a casual worker almost ten years. Saw a tweet about test and isolate payments and burst into tears.
