TX is using the playbook states like CA & others employed in the Trump years to try to stop Biden from getting rid of terrible Trump policies. Gov Abbott thinks scoring points by scapegoating immigrants is a winning strategy & continues to blame immigrants for his failures. 2/9
One lawsuit filed by TX and MO sought to prevent Biden from winding down the heinous “Remain in Mexico” program, which was instituted by Trump and left tens of thousands of asylum seekers marooned in Mexico for months or years with no way to assert their right to asylum. 3/9
Countless people have been stuck in dangerous conditions in border camps, subject to kidnapping and worse. Kids ensnared in this program were denied their Congressional rights & some were even deported to third countries --w/o their parents’ knowledge cbsnews.com/news/children-… 4/9
Late Friday night, a federal district court issued a truly bizarre decision forcing Biden to either restart this program or prove that it can jail every asylum seeker -- something that is both morally repugnant and not achievable. 5/9
The @JusticeDept moved quickly, asking the 5th circuit to block this order ASAP. The 5th Circuit failed to do so, creating the conditions for more people to be harmed. 6/9
The next step? Biden will likely seek a stay w/ the Supreme Court. If that happens, it’ll be the first time this admin asks the Court to stop a state’s attack on Biden priorities. That’s notable for #SCOTUS watchers, as these fights happened pretty often during the Trump era. 7/9
What’s the bottom line here? The legal fight continues, and so do our efforts for true justice. Biden needs to understand that undoing bad Trump policies does not = creating an asylum system where we can #WelcomeWithDignity. 8/9
