I have heard this word out of place so many times lately that I want to make a thread 1/n
ADE is Antibody Dependent Enhancement, literally, we help the virus to enter and attack our body. Is a complicated mechanism not fully understood in which our body creates specific antibodies that facilitate viral entry. 2/n
Let's go back to my first image, imagine that Sars-CoV2 want to throw a party inside our cells, normally it enter to one door ACE2 with some difficulties. In case of ADE our own body create a kind of PASS for the virus and it facilitates its entrance. Quite stupid.

This phenomenon happens in the case of suboptimal production of non-neutralizing antibodies. Meaning you are producing few antibodies that are not even neutralizing. 4/n

YES YES YES!!!

MOREOVER, so far the ADE phenomenon was NEVER observed in Sars-CoV2, NEVER!

Unfortunately, sometimes ADE is mentioned by vaccine sceptics to avoid vaccination.
Is a straw man argument because LUCKILY ADE is not a thing with Sars-CoV2.

Ho deciso di tradurre in italiano una preziosissima tabella creata dalla bravissima @mugecevik dove viene riportata l'efficacia degli attuali vaccini contro la variante DELTA. Sotto una serie di considerazioni e disclaimers.
Spoiler: funzionano!
1) i dati dal mondo reale sono i migliori in assoluto, rispetto a quelli dei trials che non rappresentano una situazione realistica
2)dati insufficienti significa che ORA lo sono ma presto potrebbero essere significativi
3)Palese l'effetto della seconda dose

4) ENORME l'effetto su malattia grave (ospedale/morte)
5) calcolare effetto su infezione e trasmissione è difficilissimo ecco perchè non ci sono ancora dati
6)ricordiamoci che il vaccino per l influenza ha efficacia 45-55% ed è estremamente utile

Too many times I heard 'vaccines induces variants' well, is not true.
Let's try to understand why. 1/n
The first, striking element, can be observed in India. We know that the current Delta variant is born in India and it was called the Indian variant. If look at the prevalence in India you can appreciate that in May 2021 was 90% prevalent. 2/n
In the same period, the percentage of fully vaccinated Indian was close to 3% (an extremely small fraction). Is easy to understand that ONLY 13% of the vaccinated pop CANNOT generate or contribute to a variant, also because the Delta was born WAY before ( probably Dec 2020) 3/n

First of all let's dive into the neutralization assay

As you can appreciate from the scheme the neutralization assay evaluates the antibodies ability to neutralize viral replication. Is pretty 'simple' you plate human cells and you infect them with the virus. 2/n
As you expected the virus will infect 100% of the cells, instead if you add antibodies those will neutralize the virus. In this second situation, you can see that the antibodies reduced viral replication by 80% meaning that only 20% of the cells are infected. 3/n
