God created us in His image, male & female - an essential pairing for the creation of life.

Likewise, God has both masculine & feminine attributes - vital for the creation of Spiritual Life.

This thread👇explores Christian traditions of the feminine.

The female Sophia/Wisdom:

Listen as Wisdom calls out!

Hear as understanding raises her voice!
By the gates at the entrance to the town, on the road leading in, she cries aloud, "I call to you, to all of you!
Proverbs 8

1/ Never heard a sermon on this.️🔝

Typical response:

Us: What's your understanding of Feminine Wisdom (or in Hebrew "Chochmah") in Proverbs 8?

Pastor: 😕
Long, awkward pause.

Us: So ... the #SBC doesn't teach Feminine Wisdom?

Pastor (checks watch): Well, gotta go! 🏃
2/ Yeah, so. We're on our own here.

[It'd be easier to link to a sermon.]

But, we'll explore using Interlinear texts and translations and Strong's Concordance.

The Scriptures are not silent on Feminine Wisdom or Chochmah.

#sbctoo #churchtoo #sbc

3/ Who is Chochmah?

Proverbs 8:22 “The Lord formed me from the beginning, before he created anything else."

In the Interlinear text, the word translated as *formed* is: קָ֭נָנִי qā·nā·nî (Strongs 7069).

But, Strong's translation is: "possessed".

4/ Therefore, this reads: "Yahweh *possessed* me from the beginning ..."

Other translations use:
set up,

Why did translators hesitate to use this term?

#sbctoo #churchtoo

5/ As a young newly-wed remarked,

"Possession is a funny word.

To have or possess a spouse (or a Savior) can mean anything from total possession of ... to total possession by.

This concept is mysterious, fraught with peril, in any language.

6/ So, what IS the relationship of Feminine Wisdom (Chochmah) to Yahweh?

Is she an attribute, a principle, an embodied metaphor, an emanation?

The Scriptural language depicts a profound relationship, perhaps akin to soulmates, or even ... #marriage.

So, what does it say: 👇
7/ The long-term intimacy between Chochmah and and Yahweh is unmistakable:

Proverbs 8:23 "I was appointed in ages past [Interlinear: from everlasting, mê·‘ō·w·lām], at the very first, before the earth began."

Clearly, they have history ...

(2 vs.)
8/ "24 I was born before the oceans were created, before the springs bubbled forth their waters.

25 Before the mountains were formed, before the hills, I was born—"

A long, long, long history ...

(2 vs.)
9/ "26 before he had made the earth and fields and the first handfuls of soil."

Chochmah was not "made" from an element (like clay): At the time, the *only* existing element ... was God.

(2 vs.)
10/ "27 I was there when he established the heavens, when he drew the horizon on the oceans.

28 I was there when he set the clouds above, when he established springs deep in the earth."

She preceded earth (vs. 25-26), air (28), or water (27).

(2 vs.)
11/ Warning! Question, not a doctrinal statement.

So, how did she come to be?

Was Chochmah composed of Yahweh's substance?

God is love. (1 John 4:8)
God is light. (1 John 1:5)
God is consuming fire. (Deut. 4:24, 9:3)

Was she composed of these?
12/ ... continuing:
"29 I was there when he set the limits of the seas, so they would not spread beyond their boundaries.

And when he marked off the earth’s foundations,"

So, she's a Feminine Presence on the planning committee.

(2 vs.) #SBC
13/ "30 I was the *architect* [(as) a (master) craftsman, ’ā·mō·wn] at his side.

I was his constant *delight* [ă·šu·‘îm], rejoicing always in his presence."

... But, also a Master Architect and a delight, always by His side.

14/ "31 And how happy I was with the world he created;

how I rejoiced with the human family!

[Interl: My delight was with the sons of Adam.]"

She rejoices, delighting in life and in His children ...

15/ "32 And so, my children, listen to me, for all who follow my ways are joyful.

33 Listen to my instruction and be wise. Don’t ignore it."

And, we are all the children of Wisdom, when we hear her joyful instruction.

(2 vs)
#SBCtoo #churchtoo

16/ "34 Joyful are those who listen to me, watching for me daily at my gates, waiting for me outside my home!

35 For whoever finds me finds *life* [ḥay·yîm] and receives *favor* [rā·ṣō·wn] from the Lord."

It is excellent to know Wisdom!

(2 vs.)
17/ "36 But those who miss me injure themselves [Interl: wrong their own *soul* - nap̄·šōw].

All who hate me love death [mā·weṯ]."

Chochmah is Feminine Wisdom, Yahweh's soulmate, his partner, by His side, assisting in administering the universe.

18/ So, we ask:

God requires Feminine Wisdom to partner in creating worlds.

Follow God's example: Welcome Wisdom and delight in her children, the #SBC survivors.

Joyfully recreate their worlds, bringing new life.

Be like God.

1/ As the only Baptists in an Interfaith Bible Study, we were asked to clarify some issues.

We assumed we could provide answers.

But, we could not.

So, we asked clergy for aid and we were soundly rebuked; our membership in a #SBC church was jeopardized.

2/ As a Study member exclaimed:

"Seriously? They'll disfellowship you for asking questions?

That's bizarre! How else can you learn?

You need better pastoral care!"

Probably. 😞

So, seven difficult #SBC theology questions. 👇

3/ Question 1: Does this passage in Numbers 8:11-31 depict a forced ceremonial #abortion, which kills the fetus in order to quell a husband's suspicion of his wife's adultery?
