Over 4,000 incarcerated people were sent to home confinement from federal prison as a result of #COVID19

For months, many of us have been pushing for @POTUS and @VP to #KeepThemHome before their grace period expires
Unfortunately, recent reporting suggests that @POTUS is going to potentially commute ONLY those who were non-violent drug offenders and had less than four years left on their sentences

Here is that reporting

nytimes.com/2021/08/30/us/…
Look, I understand, for many of the folks on home confinement, this would seem like a win, and it would be a win for every one of them.

The problem is all of the people who are on home confinement were pre-screened and present virtually no risk of recidivism
These are folks who have come home, remained crime free, rebuilt their lives, found jobs, places to live, and done everything they can do to reconnect and change their story and contribute to society

It would be brutally cruel to send them back
There is NO reason to make this complicated.....why in the world is the President parsing this?

@POTUS, Why is a white collar criminal out on home confinement more dangerous than someone who abused drugs?
And, @POTUS, what makes someone with three years and eleven months on a sentence okay to commute while someone with one more month is not (despite the fact they have already been home for a LONG time and done NOTHING wrong).

This is not non-euclidean geometry, #KeepThemHome
These folks have done exactly what everyone dreams people returning from incarceration will do, they have - despite long odds and massive reentry challenges - SUCCEEDED

WHY IN THE WORLD ARE WE SNATCHING DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY?????? #KeepThemHome
I get that not everyone appreciates nuance, but this is political triangulation (Bill Clinton style) and it will come at the expense of real human beings....it is literally picking and choosing winners and losers based on political calculations instead of on evidence or reason
Meet some of these folks, my friend @KevinARing shared a bunch of their stories in his thread earlier today ....why are we contemplating sending them back to prison?

What purpose does this serve, certainly not public safety

I have no personal enmity towards the President, I just have to call out political triangulation when I see it....we need to put PEOPLE before POLITICS

In addition, this is yet another example of why commutations MUST be moved out of the DOJ (as @POTUS promised would happen)
There is literally no criminal justice bar lower than this one....If he cannot stick the landing on this one, I really do not know what to say....It will be great for the people he commutes, but heartbreaking and cruel to those forced to return to prison for no reason
Everyone - and I mean EVERYONE needs to message @POTUS and @VP and say #KeepThemALLHome

People who are serving in the military can't comment outside of the chain of command (especially about a current mission)....that GOP folks are mad an officer was disciplined for issuing such public criticism is bizarre
Has nothing to do with politics, and they know this, regardless of what you think of the military, the theory is that a military could not work if people were able to publicly criticize their leadership outside of the chain of command
And comparisons to Vindman don't make sense, he literally did it through the legally created process, that is how you are supposed to do it.

The last thing we need is a bunch of people asking for men to be "tough"

The inability to process trauma in healthy ways causes almost all of our problems, if anything we need a lot less stereotypical "tough" and a lot more emotional health in this world
And certainly on Twitter where self-serving people spend a huge part of every single day finding people to try to attack....the last thing we need is less empathy, less caring, and more people swallowing their feelings
Look, the vast majority of the people I know who did time understand this and understand that learning to process emotions in a healthy way is critical to moving beyond a Hobbesian world (that is nothing but nasty, brutish, and short)

What people don't seem to get is that Biden is a centrist and he is "partisan" but partisan in the sense that the far left and the far right despise him not in the sense that he suggests "radical reforms"
He could literally walk on water - and the far right and the far left would still hate him....they hated him before he took office, they hate him in office, and both the far right and a huge percentage of the far left preferred Trump
Now, I am not in love with him at all, and I am increasingly getting frustrated with him.....but, people have to understand that absent a very possible second civil war or coup, most of the country lives in the middle

The Michigan Supreme Court had some things to say today about 2011 SORA today that seem to apply pretty directly to 2020 SORA as well

🔥🔥🔥 congrats @ZimbelmanJ

People v. Betts
And for all those who just love registries and can't seem to get that there is zero evidence supporting them being effective and lots of evidence suggesting they are counterproductive....they aren't legally defensible either (without substantial legal gymnastics)
And while I am not a lawyer, given this decision went far beyond Doe's v. Snyder in singling out things in the 2011 registry that were Ex Post Facto punishment, and many of those new things are in 2020 SORA

Looks like the winds of change are still blowing in Michigan

Also, I think most people are misunderstanding what happened with @Simone_Biles - she seemed to have something like the Yips and was worried it was going to cost her team a medal.....and it was also dangerous (given the complexity of the skills she tries to pull off) #Tokyo2020
In other words, she wasn't having a "mental health crisis" per se....she was losing herself in the air....which is both dangerous and could lead to mistakes that could cost her team a medal....so she decided to take one for the team
So, all of these people talking about her using mental health as an excuse.....first of all, that is messed up for all the reasons that people have been trying to explain for YEARS....but also, that is not what Biles was talking about (as near as I can tell)

What a typically sad response: Why would it be okay to assault capital officers because officers were hurt at other protests?

Also, what about all of the PEACEFUL PROTESTERS who were assaulted by law enforcement during the protests against police violence?
In addition, millions of people hit the streets in the protests against police violence, the overwhelming majority were peaceful, those are facts

acleddata.com/2020/09/03/dem…
Regardless, let's assume you were right, two wrongs don't make a right. It is not okay for protesters to be violent, it is not okay for police to be violent, and it is not okay for people to assault our capital and attack the capital police
