📢📢 The supplemental @ERASinfo application is open!

I shared details about the application in a prior thread. A few other points & tips for #Match2022 #medstudenttwitter whether you're applying in #dermatology #internalmedicine or #GenSurgMatch2022.

Applicants will be invited to complete the supplemental application once they save a participating program in any of the 3 specialties in MyERAS.

‼️ There is a 24 hour delay between saving a program and receiving the invite. So, get saving if you haven't yet!
2/
The supplemental app is now optional for ALL participating programs in the 3 specialties. All ?? are also optional.

I recommend you complete it. Why? I (& many others) feel this can only help applicants by allowing you to highlight unique qualities & prefs. 3/
For the most meaningful activities/experiences, think broad. These can come from any point in your life...before or after medical school, depending on your unique journey.

Don't limit yourself to medical school extracurriculars (but of course, feel free to include those too). 4/
Some additional tips:
✔️ Don't over-strategize about showing you are well-rounded or highlighting aspects you think programs want to see.

Be authentic about what's important. Think about what is in your personal statement, MSPE & LORs to present a cohesive picture of you. 5/
✔️ Focus your brief answer on WHY the experience was meaningful.

You may need to add a bit of explanation if the experience is not obvious from the description & structured questions, but don't waste space on details. You can include these in MyERAS. 6/
✔️ There will be overlap between MyERAS, PS & supplemental app.

✍️ MyERAS - details (what you did, who you worked with, time you spent, outcome of research)
✍️ Supp - WHY meaningful
✍️ PS - impact, additional details, how fits into goals, why you chose this path
7/
For geographic signals, you have options!

➡️ Choose up to 3 regions
➡️ No regional preference
➡️ Do not wish to communicate preference
8/
Approach really depends on what's important to you. If program characteristics >>> geography, maybe "no preference" is the way to go. If you can group most of your top program choices into 3 regions, then go for it. If geography is super important, then signal & tell us why. 9/
Preference signals (tokens) may not match up completely with geography. Some may use tokens to signal programs outside of regions that cover most other preferred programs. For some, these may align well because geography is super important to them. 10/
Remember:
✖️ Do NOT signal your home program.
✖️ Do NOT signal programs where you did an in person away/sub-I.
11/
You can signal programs where you had other experiences (research, virtual away, etc). A token is to ensure a program gives you a thorough review. Most programs will already do this for applicants they know. If in doubt, ask an advisor at that program. 12/
One little detour back to past experiences...you will be asked to share other experiences/important information that impacted your journey to residency.

*This section is not designed for everyone.*
13/
Applicants: if you have something important to share here, do it. This could include educational, economic or other hardship or something in your application you feel needs additional explanation.

Programs: please recognize that not everyone should complete this question.
14/
Last point - timing!

Complete by 9/19 ➡️ programs get data 9/29
Complete by 9/30 ➡️ programs get data 10/6

MyERAS due 9/29 - completely separate application system. No need to get it in super early, but don't wait until last minute.
15/
🖐️ Programs: please consider letting applicants know that as long as their MyERAS is in by 9/29, they have met your deadlines.

At @WashUDerm, we won't begin looking at supplemental application data until after 10/6. I encourage other #dermatology programs to do the same. 16/
@WashUDerm Good luck applicants! This is your chance to highlight your values, accomplishments, goals & more. We're so excited to learn about you and all you've done and all you will do! x

Great points by @jbcarmody on the new @ERASinfo secondary application tool. I'll add a few points & address some questions I've seen, particularly related to how the process will unfold in #dermatology for #Match2022. 1/
@jbcarmody @ERASinfo 1. Participation by individual programs is voluntary in #dermatology. We will encourage programs to participate but not mandate as a specialty.

2. Programs will decide whether the tool is required or optional for their applicants. 2/
What does this mean for you?

Because #dermatology applicants typically apply to >60 programs, unless you plan to apply to very few programs that happen to not be participating, you will very likely need to complete the new supplemental application. 3/

Just announced by @AAMCtoday: ERAS delayed; applications/MSPE released Oct 21.

Other recommendations:
- Limit away rotations
- Conduct virtual interviews
- Perform holistic review

What's missing? A mechanism to limit applications. @jbcarmody #meded 1/

Applications have been rising for years. With #COVID #pandemic related disruptions to clerkships, aways, volunteer/research opportunities, #medicalstudent anxiety will be at an all time high (understandably). 2/

We are bound to see an even steeper increase in application numbers. Please head over to @jbcarmody for his excellent blog posts on application fever for more info on the background and myths surrounding application caps: thesheriffofsodium.com/2019/03/02/the…
