LTNs - Low Traffic Neighbourhoods - Good or Bad? ๐งต(1/9)
(We're trying to be objective here & full disclosure - we have no direct experience of LTNs, just lots of tweets read.)
It seems to be far more complicated than just good or bad - there are layers on both sides...
2/9 We hear from people living *inside* LTNs that benefits include
* Lower #AirPollution
* Safer streets for active travel
* Quieter
* Less traffic within LTN, including rat-running
3/9 Yet we also hear the cons of living inside include
* Poorer access for disabled people
* Poor access for emergency vehicles
* Poor access for deliveries
* Difficulty having visitors
4/9 People living on/ near the boundary of an LTN don't seem to have anything positive to say about them. Please comment below if you do have any positive observations from outside an LTN ๐
5/9 For those living on/ near an LTN boundary the cons include
* Increased traffic at slower speeds
* Increased #AirPollution
* Increased kerbside parking (unless restrictions)
* Noisier
6/9 Conclusion?๐คท
If LTNs have a detrimental effect on people who don't benefit from living within them, they increase #inequality ...
LTNs will displace traffic unless other measures are taken to reduce it ...
7/9 We believe whoever will be affected should be part of any decisions about LTNs (& all traffic reduction schemes) - ideally through #CitizensAssemblies to ensure representation of all residents - with priority given to disabled access & active travel solutions for #equity
8/9 Whatever you have experienced or believe about LTNs, perhaps we can all agree our priority is traffic/ car/ #AirPollution reduction?
Probably we can agree active travel & disabled access are also important too?
9/9 Perhaps we can all take the time to read the lived experiences of people both within & without LTNs & try to empathise with them? Without judgement?
And perhaps we can find ways to reduce traffic in all neighbourhoods, so everyone can benefit? ๐โ
