The Ultimate Guide to Beat Procrastination

(Use Psychology to craft a custom-made plan and get rid of procrastination forever)

= THREAD =
Nothing has killed more dreams than procrastination.

It's downright frustrating.

Your plans go out of the window.

Your deadlines give up like the boy waiting for his dad to return from the cigarette store.

Regret becomes your constant companion.
But you know what's even more frustrating?

That none of the advice out there works.

Every "goo-roo" out there has a pet theory about procrastination and a branded solution to fix it.

It works for some.

But it doesn't work for you.

So what do you do? Are you doomed forever?
No. Not even close.

You just need to give up on the idea of a silver bullet and take a "create your own wok" approach.

How do you do that?

As per University of Calgary psychologist Piers Steel, there are 4 primary reasons behind procrastination:
1. Lack of Belief in Your Own Ability

You procrastinate when you are not confident in your abilities.

If you feel unsure about:

- where to start from
- how to complete the ob
- how to do the job well

You tend to procrastinate.
2. Lack of Enjoyment

You procrastinate more on the work that you don't enjoy.

But here's a curious observation.

You procrastinate more for the mildly painful or boring tasks than extremely difficult ones.
3. Lack of Focus

Distractions are all around you.

If you're constantly getting distracted, you can never bring out the quality of focus that you need.

You will most likely procrastinate.
4. Distant Deadline

You procrastinate more on the tasks where the deadline is far away.

The longer you have to finish a task, the longer you’ll wait to get started on it
Considering these 4 factors, Steel came up with The Procrastination Equation.

The equation calculates the odds of overcoming procrastination as:

Self-Belief x Enjoyment / Impulsiveness x Delay
Use this formula to identify where you are likely to procrastinate the most.

Then create strategies to overcome it.

How can you do that?

Here's how:
1. Stop Relying on Advice Blindly

This is true for present advice as well.

A strategy that worked for someone else, may not work for you.

Because the reasons may have been different.

So what do you do?

You just need to craft your own custom-built strategy.
2. Find Out Your Procrastination Factor

Go back to the 4 major causes again.

Identify which one is the most applicable for you.

Then go through the steps below to pick the correct strategy.
3. Counter Lack of Self Belief

Create small wins.

Break down that mammoth chunk of work into pieces.

Still procrastinating?

Break it down into even smaller pieces.

Repeat until they are laughably small.

And you have no more excuses to take them on.
4. Counter Lack of Enjoyment

If an intrinsic reward is not there, bring in extrinsic rewards.

Completed a mind-numbing task?

Treat yourself to a cup of coffee.

Listen to a little music.

The task will lose its drudgery.
5. Counter Impulsiveness

Identify what distracts you.

Eliminate it ruthlessly.

Keep your phone in a drawer while working.

Unplug your TV.

Do whatever it takes.

Never rely on willpower to resist distractions.

It's a losing battle.

Get rid of the root cause instead.
6. Counter Distant Deadlines

Set micro deadlines.

Artificially make them sooner if they are far away.

You have broken down the task. Now commit to complete them within a set date.

The work will get done even before you know it.
Procrastination is situation-specific.

Identify what's making you twiddle thumbs.

Formulate a strategy.

Attack the problem ruthlessly.

You'll never need to fight procrastination ever again.
