Steve Jobs, Barack Obama, Phil Jackson

These three made creating change look easy.

Here’s how you can move mountains like a pro:
You can not own change for others.

You can support the change, but it's up to them to make the commitment and follow through.

(Read that again)
The formula for change gives us three things you need to create change:

1. Dissatisfaction
2. A clear next step
3. A clear vision of the future

(Let's break each down)
Change requires dissatisfaction.

To create dissatisfaction, you need to help people see how their current actions are misaligned with their goals or values.

(Don't make the mistake of assuming they have the same goals as you.)
Steve Jobs was infamous for creating dissatisfaction by being brutally honest.

“If something sucks, I tell people to their face. It's my job.”
Change requires a CLEAR next step.

This step should be part of a bigger plan, but make sure the first step is clear and straightforward.

Change is hard, and any doubt on what the first step should be will prevent action.

Keep it simple.
Change requires a clear vision of their desired state.

Are they saving money?

Paint the picture of exactly how much they will save and what they will do with the money.
Creating change requires being specific, bold, and confident.

Believe in the people around you enough to invest in them.

Don’t let consequences catch people by surprise.

Every great leader understands how to thrive in uncertain times.

But 98.6% of people will get stuck in analysis paralysis.

8 tips to dealing with uncertainty that are actually helpful:
1. Let go of control

- Spend your energy focused only on the things in your control
- Ignore everything else
2. Learn to act with less info

- Accept the fact you will never have all the data you need
- Get started anyway

When I turned 30, I was a mess.

- Ate garbage
- Working an entry level job
- Spent weekends at the bar

And my wife was expecting our first kid.

I knew it was time for a change.
I cut down my drinking before our first kid, but not enough.

Before our first kid turned one, I got drunk, went on a bike ride, crashed and broke my elbow.

This created more work for my wife, as my ability to help was limited.
We had our second kid 18 months later.

He had a heart condition that required heart surgery within a month of being born.

This was a wake-up call.

I realized I needed to become a different person.

Leadership is hard work!

And leading virtual teams can present unique obstacles.

Here are 7 things the best leaders are doing right now.

//Thread//
1. Deliver Good News Quickly

People need good news right now. If you have an opportunity to recognize someone, do it as quickly as possible.

- Text
- Video
- Voice Memo

Whatever works for you.

Be genuine and urgent.
2. Make Regular Check-In Calls a Priority

Call your team with the sole intention of seeing how they are doing.

Make them daily or weekly, as long as you make them consistently.

- “I just called to see how you are doing”
- Avoid assumptions
- Just listen

In the past 10 years I’ve read hundreds of books about leadership.

Most of them are the same.

Here are the 5 every leader and coach should own.

// Thread //
1) The Coaching Habit

Great leaders ask great questions. This book is a cheat sheet to use in your next conversation.

One tip: Start your next coaching conversation by asking “What’s on your mind?”

You'll create much better dialogue than small talk.
2) The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

This book provides an incredible model to develop a high performing team.

1. Trust
2. Conflict
3. Commitment
4. Accountability
5. Results

Each step provides an important foundation for the next.

"I have to do everything around here!"

Have you ever said this?

Ever thought it?

It is probably your fault.

Good news.

I'm here to help you delegate.

//Thread
Effective delegation includes two steps:

1. Setting clear expectations
2. Inspection

Let's look at how >>
Clear expectations take out the guesswork.

Be sure everyone understands

- What the task is
- Who is owning the task
- When the task will be completed
- How you will be inspecting completion
