Christian Tyler reply to Geoffrey Nice QC's question whether Uyghurs targeted by PRC authorities *purely* because of BRI: "The Uyghurs are being targeted because they are in the way (BRI),because they are 'trouble';and they are trouble (in state's eyes) because they are Uyghurs."
Expert academic witness on state power and state violence in China: "Lines go straight down from state level to local level in a very centralised fashion; *local Party members and govt are executors of decisions made at the top level*. "
Male fact witness: "From the interrogation room I could see people being dragged because they could not walk back to their cell...because the soles of their feet were beaten...their faces were red and bruised...I heard one say 'I wish I was the one who died'. "
Male fact witness: "There were 70 year olds in there [detention] as well.. they did not have the ability to recite Chinese poetry [as demanded by guards]. If we needed to go to the toilet, we could go out to the toilet once a day; otherwise, there was a bucket inside the cell."
Male fact witness:"Detainees would be served what I'd describe as white vegetables, with some rice, or sometimes instant noodles. 7 days a week, we would receive so-called 'training', generally to praise CCP policy, to teach us not to seek independence, warn us against extremism"
Male fact witness: "During the time I was detained [in #Xinjiang] I had to sleep on the cold floor, and from that my lungs were seriously injured... I have been receiving treatments for my lungs of the past five years, but I'm still not ok."
Male fact witness, employed as chef in internment camp: "I saw it being constructed, it's a very big complex with high walls and barbed wire, filled with classrooms and cells. First, I was an intern for 70 days; then they asked me to be a chef". He did that to avoid re-internment
