Right, so my webinars for the day are done

Now I can concentrate on #ConnectingEurope Express

The first part of the route today is Kraków Glowny 🇵🇱 to Ostrava 🇨🇿

Here's the route, thanks to Open Railway Map - line speeds shown!
Leaving Kraków north westbound on the mainline towards Katowice - renovations almost done here, but the speed is still just vMax 120 (confirmed with my GPS!) but I assume will be increased soon

West through Zabierzów ImageImage
At Trzebina, branch south towards Chrzanów - this is not the route the regular EuroCity to Ostrava takes

The line is being upgraded right now, and at the moment the line speed here is not more than 50 km/h Image
Once we pass Czechowice-Dziedzice speeds increase again Image
We'll get a locomotive change I think in Zebrzydowice (Polish side) or Bohumin (Czech side) as the Newag Griffiin locomotive hauling the train is only OKed for Poland - interoperability, eh? ImageImage
Then via Bohumin we'll get to Ostrava - and there the #ConnectingEurope Express stops for 4 hours Image

Today has been such a weird mix of different things I'm not quite sure how to process it all...

And indeed I'm going to need time to actually properly edit my photos and videos from the #ConnectingEurope express

But for now... Some random bits and pieces ImageImageImageImage
And some more

Doesn't the colour of the... err... coal wagon match the #ConnectingEurope Express perfectly? ImageImageImageImage
Ostrava is slightly strange but great. And a Škoda tram, and the SNCF conference carriage ImageImageImageImage

Soooo take a deep breath

How do you book a Berlin-Kraków rail ticket?

A #ConnectingEurope thread... Or, more precisely, a #DisconnectedEurope thread!
There are 2 direct Berlin-Kraków trains a day

EuroCity EC 57
Berlin Hbf D: 10:37
Krakow Glowny A: 17:55

EuroNight EN 50457
Berlin Hbf D: 18:43
Krakow Glowny A: 04:08

I couldn't take the EuroCity because of a work contract this morning, and the EuroNight arrives at 4am. No!
So I need to change somewhere...

DB gave me this option - with 5 minutes to change in Poznan Glowny! 🤯

This one goes via Wroclaw, but look at the timetable! The InterCity stops 22 minutes there... Bizarre

That train is a PKP InterCity, like this:

So I have to hire a car for 4 days in late October, in Strasbourg 🇫🇷 (or somewhere close) 🤯

Long story, and don't shoot me, rail and bike nerds 😲

But how about an ⚡️ car?

But trying to *work this out* has been a headache... Summary in the 🧵
First of all, who even rents ⚡️ cars?

The sort of car hire meta searches like @check24de @KAYAK @holidayautos don't even let you filter by that
So what about the firms?

@SixtDE rents electric cars, but at Strasbourg Airport (but I am arriving by train!)

It offers me a Peugeot E-208, that costs me €5 more a day than a petrol one. And I have no details here where to charge it - Sixt how does this work?

So tomorrow 22 Sept my #ConnectingEurope express trip starts...

And because I am not a hypocrite I am going to and from the train itself... by train
22 Sept
Normal trains
Berlin 🇩🇪 - Poznan 🇵🇱 - Kraków 🇵🇱 (9 hrs)

23 Sept
#ConnectingEurope Express
Kraków 🇵🇱 - Ostrava 🇨🇿 (stops there 5 hours) - then 🌙 overnight to Ljublana 🇸🇮, arriving 24 Sept (3.5 + 11 hrs)

24 Sept
Normal train
Ljubljana 🇸🇮 - Villach 🇦🇹
(1.5 hrs)
25 Sept
Normal trains
Villach 🇦🇹 - Linz 🇦🇹 - Praha 🇨🇿 - Berlin 🇩🇪 (13.5 hrs - I wanted a scenic route!)

Between 13:00 22 Sept and 21:00 25 Sept...

Over 38 hours train travel in an 80 hour period! Even by my standards that's a bit mad

This UK Government press release about controls and Brexit! 🤯

Link via @pmdfoster
gov.uk/government/new…

I'll decrypt each bit in the thread 🧵
Title: "Government sets out pragmatic new timetable for introducing border controls"

What we set out to do before was not practical. And we want to lodge it in your minds we're not ideologues.
Emphasis box:
"- Revised timetable will give businesses more time to adjust to new processes"

Revised timetable will give government more time to complete the truck parks

"- Global pandemic has affected supply chains in the UK and across Europe"

IT'S NOT BREXIT! Err it is...

Maybe it’ll be better when I get to Brussels but jeez this first regular business trip in 18 months is frustrating… because it feels I’m wasting time
First the good: my ICE train is on time, very empty, % mask 😷 wearing is good, and I have coffee
But the bad: my alarm went at 5am. I’ve only got to Hagen.

Were I to have flown instead my mood and morals would be even worse, although perhaps I’d have the sense of making more progress
