@prof_nch Unfortunately, #BC #PHO made a ministerial exemption for profs/presenters/lecturers to unmask while teaching if they maintain a 2m barrier or are behind ‘a barrier’. I have objected to this not only on the science but also on the ethics.
@prof_nch When faculty colleagues signaled their unmasking exemption interests via email—I pointed out the power bias of STUDENTS being put in the position to police faculty for maintaining 2m—which is a LOT farther than people think. Brought in a 2m cardboard tube to demo to my students.
@prof_nch I sent 2nd email with the Marin County #US @CDCgov case study where temporarily unmasked teacher infected 1/2 a masked, distanced class with air filtration, open windows & doors—& provided a color coded image of class chart on pg 2 cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/7…
@prof_nch @CDCgov AND let my colleagues know that all YR4 students (whom I teach) were doing the Marin case study as part of my #COVID19 in the classroom lesson in my course.
@prof_nch @CDCgov I also refuse to attend faculty meetings where a presenter or other faculty are eating (need to unmask) or are taking advantage of another exemption that allow faculty to meet & unmask indoors if no students or members of the public are present.
@prof_nch @CDCgov This allowing unmasking regardless of #vaccination status in all-faculty meetings was also provided by #BC #PHO in a ministerial order on masks that I reviewed with a @WorkSafeBC officer. It makes little sense when otherwise all must mask indoors. 🤬
@prof_nch @CDCgov When I sent emails asking for advanced notice of faculty meetings where attendees would be eating, unmasking—or presenters unmasking because I would not attend F2F— I literally had a faculty member email me —2x—that they felt offended & that felt my email was targeted at them.
@prof_nch @CDCgov Watching the particular individual go unmasked F2F while I virtually attended very 1st meeting of yr raised my awareness colleagues might by choice go unmasked & it was not going to be okay with me. Experience made me aware I would not be able to do F2F indoors with unmasked.

Antiviral pills for #COVID19 may be available soon: 3 in clinical trials, results expected as soon as late fall/winter: Merck & Ridgeback Biotherapeutics’ #molnupiravir ; Pfizer’s #PF07321332, & Roche & Atea’s #AT527 usatoday.com/story/news/hea…
“only one antiviral drug, remdesivir, has been approved to treat #COVID. But it is given intravenously to patients ill enough to be hospitalized, & is not intended for early, widespread use. By contrast, the top contenders under study can be packaged as pills.”
“That would mean millions …could have access to a daily orally administered medication, ideally a single pill, that could be taken for five to 10 days at the first confirmation of #COVID19 infection”

#ABEd #k12 “As schools across Alberta continue to struggle with outbreaks and soaring cases of #COVID19 [in schools], no changes have been announced around increased support for identifying cases and contact tracing” calgaryherald.com/news/local-new…
True test of “leadership” is not found in times of prosperity, health, & peace—those waters are calm & readily navigable: The true tests of leadership occurs in navigating challenge, distress, & upheaval well, at the least minimizing harms if not prospering.
“As many as 7 Calgary schools are now being investigated for #COVID19 outbreaks and, according to a letter sent to the province by the Calgary Board of Education last week, at least 350 self-reported COVID cases are now linked to more than 120 CBE schools” #k12 #Delta

When educators critique their school or institutions-& for #BCEd public #k12 can extend to comment on entire public system—even if the critique is merited—they open themselves up to legally supported discipline & possible termination. Higher exposure statements incl more risk.
This legal situation extends to #postsecondary. Members of the public who call out educators for ‘not saying or doing more’ to protect students & schools vs #COVID19 need to be mindful of this risk to their employment —which some could weather far better than others.
And for those educators in #k12 or #postsecondary who have the privilege of power or position or income to respectfully challenge a school/institution/system policy, procedure, IMO they really need to reflect on stepping up to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves”

@prof_nch (1/?) Profs thinking it’s ok to exercise privilege & unmask to teach in indoor classroom of students who must attend or possibly fail class—either have COMPLETELY NO understanding that 1)#aerosol is main transmission route for #COVID19; 2) how aerosol transmission actually works;
@prof_nch (2/?) 3) #Delta is hypertransmissible with rate of 1 infecting on avg 5-7 more vs earlier strains 2-3 more; 4) most infected don’t know they’re infected when they are at their most infectious because symptoms only show after peak infectiousness—if ppl not asymptomatic; …
@prof_nch (3/?) most have no real functional understanding of indoor air quality in own classrooms & rely solely on air system filtration—don’t monitor it with CO2 meters, keep windows/doors open; 4) don’t think about minimal acceptable air quality vs ‘good/excellent’ by #ASHRAE standard;

“People who choose not to get the #COVID19 vaccine due to personal preferences or “singular beliefs” do not have a right to accommodations under Ontario’s human rights law, the province’s rights watchdog says” thestar.com/news/gta/2021/…
“While human rights law prohibits discrimination based on creed — someone’s religion, or a non-religious belief system that shapes their identity, world view and way of life — personal preferences or singular beliefs do not amount to a creed, the commission said”
“even if someone can show they have been denied service or employment over their creed, “the duty to accommodate does not necessarily require they be exempted from vaccine mandates, certification or COVID testing requirements,”

What #DrBHenry ‘s ‘recovered’ can look forward to: #COVID19 Could Trigger Autoimmune Disease Even After Recovery, Stanford Univ Study Shows | IFLScience iflscience.com/health-and-med…
“Within a week after checking in at the hospital, about 20 % of [hospitalized COVID-19] patients had developed new antibodies to their own tissues that weren't there day they were admitted… autoantibody levels were similar to what you'd see in a diagnosed autoimmune disease.”
“When the researchers analyzed the blood of nearly 200 hospitalized #COVID19 patients compared to a healthy control group, they found anti-cytokine antibodies in three-fifths of the #COVID19 patients – four times the levels found in the control group”
