40 years ago today. Sept 29, 1981. The Washington Post: "Another Car Bomb Explosion in Lebanon Kills 15." It is the latest explosion in a deadly terrorist campaign that started 2 weeks earlier. A mysterious group, the FLLF, has being claiming responsibility for these attacks 1/ ImageImage
In 1980, the FLLF claimed responsibility for an assassination attempt vs the US Ambassador in Lebanon. Palestinians and others in Lebanon insist that the FLLF is merely a cover for Israeli agents acting covertly. Western intelligence sources aren't sure. 2/ ImageImage
In 2018, Ronen Bergman (journo for @nytimes & @YediotAhronot ) confirmed that the Palestinians had been right all along: senior IDF officers did indeed create & run the FLLF. Since 2018 US media has remained completely SILENT about these revelations: 3/
More specifically Bergman describes how Ariel Sharon personally directed the Sept-Oct 1981 car bombing campaign. Sharon's goal: to provoke the PLO into using terrorism, which would have given Israel an excuse to invade Lebanon in the name of .... fighting the evil terrorists! 4/
Of course, the US media is NOT marking the 40th anniversary of this Israeli terrorist car bombing campaign. Terrorist campaigns are newsworthy ONLY when "we" are the targets & victims. When "we" are the perpetrators, they are ERASED:
A note about the scale of this terrorist campaign: according to a RAND note from 1983, the Sept 1981 FLLF bombs accounted for 40% of all deaths due to terrorism for that entire year & represented 8 times more deaths than those due to Palestinian terrorism for 1980-81 combined! ImageImage
This RAND note can be found here: rand.org/content/dam/ra…
I wrote about all this in May 2018 mondoweiss.net/2018/05/remark… & assumed that US journalists & US "terrorism experts" would jump on these revelations. The answer was & remains absolute silence...
I also wrote about this in French (with translations into Arabic) here: orientxxi.info/lu-vu-entendu/…
And here: orientxxi.info/magazine/le-re…

10/01/1981: 40 years ago TODAY: Massive car bomb explodes in front of PLO offices in Beirut. 83 are killed. The street is mangled with body parts. Other bombs are defused. A mysterious group called the Front for the Liberation of Lebanon from Foreigners claims responsibility 1/ ImageImageImage
This is just the latest in series of extraordinarily deadly car bombings that started 2 weeks earlier. Hundreds of Palestinian & Lebanese civilians are killed. At the time, it is the deadliest car bombing campaign in history. All are claimed by that mysterious group, the FLLF 2/
At the time, Palestinians & many Lebanese people insist that Israel is behind FLLF, that it is a fictitious group created by Israel to hide its role in this #terrorist campaign. Media often report these accusations. Israel insists this is a form fo "Arab on Arab" violence 3/

@bungarsargon @JoinPersuasion @Yascha_Mounk @TomRachman This is probably true: "critical race theory is the perfect ideology for affluent progressive whites who want nothing to change—but who still want to feel like the heroes of a story about social justice." But COUNTLESS progressives are not affluent/white & DO want real change
@bungarsargon @JoinPersuasion @Yascha_Mounk @TomRachman Also: you caricature the 1776 Project: its authors say "we should consider whether..." & the entire note u link to is devoted to how this idea was phrased & rephrased, is about nuance. In your version leftists speak in absolutes: "it must be that," "cannot be," "it is proof that" ImageImage
@bungarsargon @JoinPersuasion @Yascha_Mounk @TomRachman & there is this (insulting?) caricature of the social justice mvt. Do u truly believe that everyone in this broad, diverse mvt follows just one theory? Thinks only in terms of power & only as it applies to race? That they all agree? Never talk, debate, fight over these issues? Image

It's been 49 days. 49 busy days. And yet somehow the Biden administration still has NOT reversed Trump's Executive Order that threatens sanctions, monetary penalties & imprisonment on persons who assist the ICC!
This is shameful. And so revealing.
One way to think of terrorism is that it is the peacetime equivalent of war crimes. Opposing the ICC (as Israel does, as the US has done: see the Hague Invasion Act!!!) is a clear indication that "we" are NOT opposed to terrorism at all: we want impunity for "our terrorists" 2/
The car bombing described below was conducted by the CIA, Great Britain, Saudi Arabia & Israel. It killed 80 civilians in March, 1985. There has of course never been any accountability for this crime. Nor any acknowledgement of our responsibility!!! 3/

March 8, 1985: Massive car bomb kills 80 people (mostly women & children) in Beirut. The target: Mohammed Fadlallah, a Shia cleric. A few weeks later, Bob Woodward writes that the CIA was behind the bombing. The war on terrorism is, & always has been, pure propaganda 1/
May 12, 1985: Woodward writes that the CIA played a role in the bombing. Note the headline: "Anti-Terrorist Unit Blamed in Beirut Bombing." What "we" do is NEVER "terrorism." It is always "anti-terrorism." The "terrorists" are always the "others" 2/
latimes.com/archives/la-xp…
In his 1987 biography of CIA Director Casey, Woodward would write that the DCI, on his death bed, confirmed to him that the CIA was indeed involved in this massive car bombing: chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-19… 3/

A review of US counterterrorism policies is under way. We must find a way out of deadly cycle of "terrorism" & "counter-terrorism." Only way we will do so is by ending silence about "our" (US, ISR, France etc) "terrorism" & by realizing that the DISCOURSE on "T" is pure ideology
Here is perfect illustration: in Feb 2018 Ronen Bergman published "Rise & Kill First," book on history of Israel's "targeted killings" in its fight v "the terrorists." It COULD have led to intelligent, constructive public discussion about morality or legality of use of force v T
After all, this book contained a STUNNING revelation: in early 1980s, very senior Israeli officials (Sharon, Dagan, Eitan, Ben-Gal) conducted a huge car bombing "terrorist" campaign that killed hundreds of civilians in Lebanon.

Dec 31, 1981: Tomorrow Beirut stadium will be bombed, PLO leadership decimated, Arafat dead. Along w/ countless civilians
This is the story of the kind of #terrorism we never hear about: where Palestinians are victims, not perpetrators. Israelis perpetrators, not victims
THREAD
On Jan 1, PLO would celebrate anniversary of its founding. Defense Minister Ariel Sharon saw opportunity to get rid of whole leadership in one fell swoop. In late Dec., agents recruited by Meir Dagan placed remotely controlled explosive devices in stadium. But that was not all
A secret Israeli unit had also prepared “three vehicles - a truck loaded with a ton and a half of explosives and two Mercedes sedans with 550 pounds each.” On Jan 1, members of the FLLF would drive & park the vehicles in front of the stadium.
