Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, commenting on the sentencing of Sarah Everard’s murderer, said:

"It is right that the perpetrator of this heinous crime will never leave prison but this can never make up for Sarah’s family’s loss.
"All women and girls must be able to have confidence in our police to keep them safe.

"It is very clear that serious mistakes were made and there now must be an urgent, fully transparent and comprehensive investigation to ensure that this never happens again and to ensure women’s confidence and trust in the police.
"The Gov must also recognise that far stronger laws are needed to address the unacceptable violence & harassment women & girls are subjected to on our streets. Labour would change the law so that those who rape, abduct & murder an individual are always given a whole life order."
