OK. I'll say it. What are we to conclude from the all male @NobelPrize awards in #STEM these past two weeks?
1st. I'm sure the winners were all deserving. There's nothing to take away from them, and that is not my intention.
1/12
2nd. But there are so many deserving #WomenInSTEM, not the least of whom is Katalin Karikó @kkariko.
2/12
Imagine your research lays the groundwork for a novel #vaccine that is leading the world out of a once-per-century global pandemic. Surely that is worth at least one if not two @NobelPrize awards?
3/12
I don't buy the "not enough time" argument. Pfizer vaccine was approved on 11 December 2020 a full SIX WEEKS prior to the @NobelPrize nomination date.
4/12
I'm also not buying the "not enough impact" argument. The number of lives saved alone is a good metric for this. Economies are opening up. Need I say more?
5/12
Is it possible that no one thought to nominate her and other #WomenInSTEM for the @NobelPrize? And why would an accomplishment of such enormous importance even require outside nomination? Surely the committee could figure that out on their own?
6/12
Anyway, I'm left thinking about Jennifer Doudna's first words upon winning the @NobelPrize in 2020:
7/12
"My feeling is, you know, I think among women and girls that sometimes there's a sense that no matter what they do that their work will not be recognized the way it would be if they were a man" #WomenInSTEM@NobelPrize
8/12
Can you imagine if that is among your first words upon winning the @NobelPrize ?! The shocker is that even Jennifer feels it, and she has clearly been at the very top of the science game for decades.
9/12
Jennifer goes on to end optimistically, "and I hope this prize and this recognition changes that...."
When the deadline comes around this winter, make sure you have submitted your @nobelprize nominations for the talented & deserving #WomenInSTEM who are quietly changing the world for the better.
Together, we can make a difference for our daughters and their daughters.
