Modi’s speech on human rights at #NHRC today exposed his problematic & incorrect understanding of human rights. Most unfortunate part was that there was only one passing mention of the constitution, but references to ‘tradition’, ‘culture’ & religion could be found throughout.
1. A constant Hindutva talking point was repeated by Modi; that human rights & duties are dependent on each other. No. Rights against state always trump duties. Duties are not enforceable, rights are.
People in power failed to discharge their duties. This resulted in a deadly second wave where people died without vaccines, oxygen & hospital beds
2. He mentioned that the question of rights arises when a govt scheme’s benefits are given to some & not to others. Can Modi explain why no Muslim beneficiary of PMAYG in UP has gotten a house since 2019? Why are Muslims being denied their fair share in development schemes?
3. Modi believes that he’s increased dignity of poor by giving them toilets etc. What’s their dignity’s worth when right in India’s capital over 50 people are killed in a pogrom? Is their dignity respected when a Minister’s son mows down farmers & Minister isn’t even removed?
4. He claimed credit for the triple talaq law. He also criticised human rights-jeevis for ‘selectivity’ & bias when criticising human rights violations. Why did Modi not bring a revolutionary law that protects ALL women who were deserted by their husbands?
There are at least 20 lakh Hindu women who deserved legal protection from the social evil of wife abandonment.
5. Modi outlined his govt’s policy on paid maternity & opening up sectors where women were prohibited previously. This is also a white lie. The female labour participation rate in India had fallen to 16% in 2020 from more than 26% in 2005
6. It’s also extremely unfortunate that Modi mentioned farmers without even mentioning their human right to livelihood. Hundreds have died protesting the three farm laws, but Modi has refused to repeal the laws or even listen to farmers’ concerns
7. For us, human rights protect...HUMANS. But Modi thinks human rights mean we don’t discriminate against animals. At a time when Muslims have been maimed & lynched in name of “cow protection”, this is very insensitive. Unfortunately, this is what we’ve come to expect from PM

The statements after the latest round of talks with #China clearly show that they’ll continue to remain on Indian territory & @PMOIndia can do nothing. Sad that a new status quo has been created on LAC. This denies our forces access to the areas they traditionally patrolled. 1/
This loss of control over our territory to China has been on for 20 months, but Parliament has not been briefed in detail nor have questions been taken in an open press conference. Why is Modi silent? Or does he still say that no one has encroached our territory? 2/
Citizens need to know the full truth. An all party parliamentary delegation must be taken to Ladakh to independently study the situation. There must be a full debate in Parliament. Modi’s strategy is to spin half truths. There’s no real plan to deal with Chinese aggression 3/
Assam has already achieved replacement levels of TFR 2.1. National TFR is 2.2. In simple words, there’s no population explosion 1/n
Central govt has itself opposed coercive family planning & called it unnecessary in the Supreme Court
Govt’s Economic Survey 2018-19: “Population is now growing growing below 1% in South, WB, Punjab, Odisha, ASSAM & Himachal” 2/n thehindu.com/news/national/…
Your govt should worry about skewed sex ratio due to barbaric practice of sex-selective abortions. It’s projected that even in 2036 Assam’s sex ratio will still be seriously skewed in favour of men. There’s a clear need to fight against underlying sexist cultural ideas 3/n
Thanks to @PMOIndia for another episode of an unnecessary lecture that could have been a press release. Reversal of vax policy seems to be result of SC's order. Although blame of a terrible vaccine policy has been put on states, it's Modi who failed to ensure vax supply 1/n
Modi put politics before saving lives. Did it create horrible "liberalised" vaccine policy just to insult states? It's always chosen gimmicks over efforts to increase vax production. Forget everything else, only question for PM is why's there such large shortage of vaccines? 2/n
Till April, no money was spent on ramping up vaccine production. If there are no vaccines, it does not matter who procures it. Not surprisingly, private hospitals will continue to have 25% quota so that rich have ‘VIP queue’, while poor have to wait for vaccine availability 3/n
