#Lebanon: Armed clashes in #Beirut today during a protest against the judge investigating last year’s port explosion. Hezbollah and Amal militants in open gun battles after being shot at from rooftops by currently unknown gunmen. Several people killed.
Extremely tense situation in #Beirut. Details are confusing right now. It seems no one as of yet knows who opened fire on the protest. Return fire all over the place.
Urban battles in #Beirut. Very close quarters. Stray or ricocheting bullets in environments like this are rife. Be careful if you're out there.
Nine years today since the beginning of the revolution in #Rojava, which fought back ISIS and introduced a new form of radical democracy and gender equality in a very volatile place.
Here's some of my favourite photos I took when I was last out there.
Originally led by Kurdish forces, the Rojava revolution includes Arabs, Syriacs, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Armenians, Turkmen, and Western volunteers.
Whilst often inaccurately (and knowingly) refereed to as a Marxist/Leninist enclave in the media, in reality Rojava is trying to implement a system that resembles more closely a sort of left-wing libertarianism. They call it Democratic Confederalism.
The esoteric neo-Nazi militant group Atomwaffen Division is trying to reform in Europe. They’re also trying to obtain firearms. belltower.news/far-right-terr…
Today it was announced that Atomwaffen will be designated a terrorist organisation here in the UK. The Atomwaffen founder once came here to visit National Action members. There was also a UK Atomwaffen cell called Sonnenkrieg Division. independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
The de-facto leader of Atomwaffen Division was sentenced to prison today for three years. See thread:
#Ukraine: Russian-backed separatist of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) have announced military conscription for citizens born 1994 - 2003. This comes at a time of drastically increased fighting on the frontlines in the Donbas. Not looking good.
In response, Biden has reaffirmed his "unwavering support" for #Ukraine. This is becoming very precarious again.
Pay attention to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill—it is an attempt by the government to push Britain deeper into authoritarianism. It will restrict free protests in a way Russia and Turkey does. This is a vicious attack on freedom in the UK.
“It will become a crime to fail to follow restrictions the protesters ‘ought’ to have known about, even if they have not received a direct order from an officer.”
Under this bill you could get up to 10 years in prison for toppling a statute. Bare in mind the average jail time for a pedophile in Britain is less than 5 years.
