Almost every Nandi statue in Warangal you see will be with mutiliated ears, snout and broken legs. By the way, care to explain why there are only three or four Kakatiya Era temples surviving in Hanamkonda when Warangal Fort itself is reputed to have more than a thousand temples?

Coming to Thousand Pillars Temple itself. You say it's not touched, right? Let's ignore the vicious damage to the Nandi idols. The temple is called Trikutalaya and it has three sanctums - for Siva, Vishnu and Surya. Care to explain where the Siva and Vishnu idols disappeared?

Now, coming to the claims of "restoring worship". Muslims ruled Warangal for a total of 13 years before they were kicked out. And the Muslim Governor of Telangana/Sultanabad is Malik Maqbul who was forcibly converted to Islam. Before he was Malik Maqbul, he was Nagaya Ganna,

the Fort Governor of Warangal. Even his son was fighting against him in his new Avatar as Malik Maqbul. Bringing him hints at the desperation and tenuousness of Muslim control of Warangal - forget the villages, they weren't even able to control anything outside Warangal Fort.

In fact, the fort was under a loose siege within four years of conquest. If Thousand Pillar Temple survives, its not because Ulugh Khan was benevolent. That besides, its because he was scared to touch it. How pious a Muslim Malik Maqbul was, do we know?

And do we even know how much Tughluq Era damage was undone by Musunuri Nayaks and Rachakonda? One look at Ulugh Khan's track history, people will be laughing at you if you claim he destroyed every temple but had special love fot one specific temple.

Rather than he protecting the temple, I would rather say as like in Rudra Mahalaya and elsewhere, Thousand Pillar Temple was also converted as a mosque but was reclaimed back. That has got a higher probability of occurrence than Ulugh Khan loving Nandis there sans ears and legs.

Swayambhu Devalayam is destroyed but the idol still stays. Thousand Pillar Temple super structure stays but idols missing. All other temples missing in Warangal Urban. That's the hard truth.

Now, you may want to argue, no, they were capable enough but failed. Now, have a look at this image. Do you notice the crack running the length of Nandi's body? That's a hint that they tried to break it but miserably failed.

Now why did they fail - is it because of tenuous control, or is it because of retaliatory attacks, one may never know. But the fact lies, the temple has a thousand scars of war but still proudly stands.
