1. For the past eleven months, the pro-#Ethiopia camp has been screaming bloody murder regarding the virtually complete media blackout of Pro-#Ethiopian voices.
The media blackout and the negative coverage of #Ethiopia by the MSM has resulted in a cascading effect, leading astray not only ordinary citizens but also academicians who you think would know better.
For this thread, demonstrating the the media blackout, I have collaborated with another exceptionally talented Ethiopian, @Samriethio!
2/ We sifted through news coverage of the conflict accessed through Google. Based on the assumption that journalists would uphold sacred principles of their profession & show both sides of the story, the expectated outcome was an approximately equal representation of both sides.
If these were your expectations too, you would be sorely disappointed.
According to our analysis, news articles were extremely more likely to mention #TPLF compared with #GOE, which tells you a lot about the narratives these articles are more likely to push.
3/ During our analysis we also observed a disturbing propensity to refer to the #GOE as @AbiyAhmedAli! Ever heard of the US referred as Biden or the UK as Johnson? The closest you get to this is the designation, the Biden Adminstartion.
This is not and idle slip by the likes @decalnwalsh or @simonmarks, it is a racist dog whistle used to insinuate that the PM is another rogue African dictator, unaccountable to even the people of Ethiopia!
When we compare the coverage the MSM afforded @AbiyAhmedAli compared with #TPLF, a similar picture emerges. Apart from a couple of bumps which were due to increment in negative coverage, the coverage was very low compared with #TPLF.
4/We also compared the media coverage of #Amhara and #Afar regions over time and expected to see a significant bump in coverage following the withdrawal of the ENDF from Tigray and the start of TPLF agression towards Amhara and Afar.
Yet the same bias still persists! Amharas and Afars keep getting massacred and yet the news remained firmly fixated on #Tigray, even if there has not been active fighting in Tigray for more than three months!
5/ When you look at the pictures showing the breakdown by continents, you would be shocked by the fact how the MSM have been successful in making sure the Ethiopian side of the story never reaches ordinary Americans and Europeans.
Based on the information fed to them by the MSM,people all over the world, believe with religious fervor the 'Tigray Genocide' narrative fabricated by #TPLF and peddled by their enablers in the media.
These graphs tell a sad story. The media's is not being deceived by the #TPLF! The media is not only complicit but also actively taking part in the deception. Paraphrasing @nntaleb, if you flip a coin a hundred times and get 99 heads in a row; the coin is rigged!
We #Ethiopians know fully well that the game is rigged against our country. And yet we will keep on fighting back because we are Ethiopians and we only have one country to call home!
Ethiopia shall prevail, not because it can but because it must!
Thread #BadScience: activism masquerading as scholarship
Three scholars started out with a commendable research question: to see whether disinformation was being used in the ‘Tigray’ conflict by both sides! The bad news is they did a very bad job! Exceptionally bad!
For this thread I collaborated with the exceptionally talented @malesadin and here are our findings.
1/ In terms of methodology, the researchers used qualitative methods to contextualize their SM data analysis, but don’t give the details of the qualitative side of the research
This makes it almost impossible for other researchers to replicate their research and confirm or dis-confirm their findings. Why the authors chose to do this is anyone’s guess!
1/ @wdavison10’s favorite trope is his claim that he is an ‘Independent Analyst’ of all things #Ethiopian. So much so that he DM’d me following my previous thread👇 on him, saying that it was full of errors & inaccuracies.
I took his outrage seriously and asked @Kings_of_Nile to undertake a network analysis of Mr. @wdavison10's twitter outputs and interactions. If truly independent his network would have reasonably proportional representation from both camps. This is what we have uncovered!
1/ The expulsion of the seven UN workers have sparked a lot of controversy. This thread delves into the connection of one of them, Kwesi Sansculotte-Greenidge, with none other than Tsadkan G/Tensae.
2/ In 2011, South Sudan became the youngest nation in the world. Soon afterwards, Tsadkan, went to Juba as Security Sector Reform (SSR) advisor to the new SS government, employed by the UK Department of International Development and worked in Juba for several years.
3/ From 2011-14, Kwesi Sansculotte-Greenidge was Coordinator of ACCORD's South Sudan Initiative that focuses on SSR and was based in Juba!
The 'IC' is at its wits end because GOE and #Ethiopians are not reacting the way they expected. They keep saying there is no military solution to the crisis and yet make a non-military solution very unlikely by pushing the GOE too hard....
.....and putting its back against the wall. By refusing to condemn TPLF and pushing the GOE to engage with #TPLF, a universally reviled group in Ethiopia, they are essentially forcing the GOE to choose between the ‘IC’ and the people of #Ethiopia.
The 'IC' refused to acknowledge let alone appreciate positive moves by the GOE; making the GOE come to the natural conclusion that there is no positive to come out of complying with the demands of the ‘IC.’
1/ “gaslighting” refers to a specific type of manipulation where the manipulator is trying to get someone else (or a group of people) to question their own reality, memory or perceptions. ...
Gaslighting is not a new invention; it has been used successfully to justify slavery, colonialism and racism to the victims themselves and now in 2021 it is being used with little subtlety to break the spirit of #Ethiopia.
2/ As part of the strategy, black journalists and politicians are being co-opted as faces of this campaign to further undermine the legitimacy of the grievance of millions of #Ethiopians who know beyond a shadow of doubt that a coordinated campaign is being employed against them.
Investigative Journalism is Dead, Long Live Investigative Journalism!
1/ On September 5, @CNN came out with a piece of 'Investigative Journalism' by one @nimaelbagir. Even by @CNN's low standards this article was atrocious, to say the least.
Many Ethiopians including me took to SM to expose CNN’s latest debacle. To put it mildly, the story was dead on arrival!👇
[Humera Massacre Debunked – I]
2/ Now, this #Ethiopian army of Tweeter sleuths (@EthioCyberia, @Eliezer, @NbaAddict & others) have exposed that the story had been revised quietly [silent-edited]on Sept 8.
