Investigative Journalism is Dead, Long Live Investigative Journalism!
1/ On September 5, @CNN came out with a piece of 'Investigative Journalism' by one @nimaelbagir. Even by @CNN's low standards this article was atrocious, to say the least.
Many Ethiopians including me took to SM to expose CNN’s latest debacle. To put it mildly, the story was dead on arrival!👇
[Humera Massacre Debunked – I]
2/ Now, this #Ethiopian army of Tweeter sleuths (@EthioCyberia, @Eliezer, @NbaAddict & others) have exposed that the story had been revised quietly [silent-edited]on Sept 8.
3/ As noted at the time👇, the revisions actually made matters worse by exposing Nima’s star witness as a fraud while taking down @berhe_lucy’s sad excuse of journalism in one fell swoop.
A host of other questions are raised by the revision [courtesy of @EliezerAbate]
- Why did experts who wanted to remain unnamed due to security concerns just suddenly decide -- just three days later -- to be identified by name?
- The experts testify that all "bodies had been exposed to some form of chemical agent" ... three days later "the experts said it was impossible to state definitively at this point whether that preservation occurred naturally.
- In the original article, @nimaelbagir said, "this state of preservation makes it easier to identify the marks on the bodies and what could have caused them" (she completely removed this line). On the new article this magically turned into "limited areas of decomposition"
4/ In the following days, @CNN, in a campaign of damage limitation tried to save the story by associating it with @jaketapper & @LyndaKinkade . Kinkade, who thought Tigray was in Nigeria tried to vouch for Nima, who thought Lucy was in Ethiopia…the whole thing was so farcical!!
5/ Obviously, the right thing to do is to apologize. Unfortunately, my suspicion is that Nima’s/CNN’s pride has been wounded & that they are working with the Tigray-Hamdayet-TMH nodes to come up with a better story for next time. Nima’s Salamander Tale continues regenerating!
6/ The only way they can do this is to make sure that the next batch of bodies is either chemical free or make the forensic 'reports' chemical free. Gerri would be replaced by another cast member (no baseball hat this time around).....
....The bodies would be of younger kids and women. They would have identifying cards or photographs on their person. The story would include someone, preferably a woman, who would swear that the body belongs to someone she knows, preferably someone very close to her.
7/ @CNN is using the ‘Genocide’ narrative perfected by #TPLF, in its effort to demonize #Ethiopia and help rehabilitate #TPLF. CNN is perpetuating this narrative at the expense of millions of #Ethiopians who will be living as neighbors whatever the outcome of the conflict.
All the blood that will be shed in retribution and counter retribution between the people of Tigray and Amhara is on CNN’s hands! It is on Nima’s hands! #BloodOnYourHandsCNN #BloodOnYourHandsNima

1/ These are some of the earliest reference to 'Tigray Genocide'. Within 48 hours of the start of the war, the claim of genocide took off. (have already done a couple of threads on #TPLF & genocide as a political strategy)
The pro-#TPLF propaganda machinery understood and exploited a particular weaknesses of the liberals clinically. They exploited the mortal fear of the liberals of being accused of racism or aiding and abetting a genocide or sexual exploitation.
They understood all too well that all they needed to do was make the allegation. They harassed dissenting voices right and left. The pro-#TPLF side made great use of the fear of getting cancelled. It worked like a charm!
1/The rainy season is coming to an end. Roads will be more passable for military convoys, the skies will be clear for fighter jets & hundreds of thousands newly minted soldiers will soon be joining the frontlines.
2/ #TPLF and their allies know the end is near. #TPLF are massacring civillains as part of their plan to transform the conflict into an ethnic war and pave the ground for R2P. Their western allies are doing their best to force the government to negotiate.
3/ They started the pressure with the executive order from President Biden.
It would not be surprising if the EU/UK/UN restart heaping pressure on the GOE. The media has already restarted their campaign.
@mekdes_asefa has done a great job of exposing CNN's bias against #Ethiopia & a possible direct line of communication with Getachew Reda himself. This thread will highlight this & other aspects of CNN's #InformationLaundering activities.
1/ For this thread I focused on 45 articles produced by CNN since November 4. @nimaelbagir was involved in 20 of these articles followed closely by @bethlehemfel. Unsurprisingly, all the @CNN articles I looked into were highly negative in their coverage of GOE.
Only one articles coveres the alleged misdeeds of #TPLF. The article by @bethlehemfel, @eoin_mc_sweeney, covered the #MaikadraMassacre as reported by @amnesty but conveniently left out parts of the report identifying the victims & perpetrators.
On the missing UN trucks: 1/ #TPLF invaded #Afar on July 17. Aid delivery was reduced to a trickle. It was routed out of Afar in the first week of September. More that 149 trucks made it to #Tigray. Conclusion: it was #TPLF that was hampering aid delivery.
2/ 428 out of 466 UN trucks that entered #Tigray haven't returned. This raises a host of questions:
- Who was the guarantor in Tigray with whom @WFP was dealing with? #TPLF?
- Where are the trucks now, based on GPS tracking? Any of them in Amhara region?
- Trucks have not been returning since mid-July. Why are we hearing about it only now?
- Where are the drivers of these trucks? Are they detained? What do they say about who took the trucks?
1/ Davison is an employee of the @CrisisGroup, a New York based organization that claims to work to "....prevent wars....& ...build a more peaceful world."
@CrisisGroup claims to be an independent organization but a cursory examination of their finances tells a different story. A very different story!!
Their biggest nongovernmental donor is Soros' Open Society Foundation (nothing to look here)
49% of their funding (19 mill USD) actually came from government grants. And who are these gracious countries? The Netherlands (5.9 mill), Canada (3.5 mill), Norway (1.5 mill), Sweden (1.03 mill). Other funders include EU (2.7 mill), France, Finland and Ireland. 🤔
