What’s the role of the US government in the Central American migration crisis? Arguably a very powerful, defining role and one that continues to drive inequality and violence in the #GlobalSouth.
In March 2020, Border Patrol reported 172k unauthorized migrants from C. America & Mexico, a 70% increase from Feb & a 20-year record high. Spikes in migration happen every 2 to 3 years and often go unaddressed: fam.ag/3jktU1p
Economic and political turmoil, gender and gang violence, climate change & corruption have been factors driving #migration in the region for years. Today, the effects of Covid-19 are yet another reason why people are leaving in search of more security and stability.
The situation for those in the Northern Triangle is significantly worse & has caused an influx of #migrants since the homicide increase in 2014. Their governments struggle to find solutions to the factors that motivate their people to leave: on.cfr.org/3j0VcsA via @CFR_org
Current #USstrategies causing harm include #PreventionThroughDeterrence, extraordinary powers for Border Patrol, militarized policing, private companies profiting from migrants being detained, & more.
The US goes beyond its own borders - US security strategies spill over to #Mexico with visa requirements for migrants, extra checkpoints, and funding & training for foreign border guards to increase migration prevention efforts.
From its inception in January 2019 to when Biden took office in January 2021, the #MPP sent 70,000 people back to Mexico. When hearings were suspended, less than 1% of them won asylum (521 people): americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/migra…
Prior to Biden taking office, he made it well known that he disagreed with the migration policies used by the Trump administration. Yet, Biden has yet to follow through with many promises made, such as removing #Title42. He continues harmful practices of prior administrations.
Since the start of Biden’s presidency, little hope has been seen with regards to real changes of US strategies. Refugees are criminalized for attempting to seek asylum and chances of successfully completing the process is compared to winning the lottery – nearly impossible.
Biden’s plan to give money to Mexico to host asylum seekers will not solve the problem. It will only run the risk of unintended consequences if the US does not follow through on its promises.
Reported by @pewresearch, 82% of Latinos believe the U.S. immigration system needs major changes
Children are still being kept in cages, reports of sexual assault by #ICE agents against women in detention centers continues, and lack of legal representation for #migrants are just some of the problems that are infringing on the rights of asylum seekers in the US.
Due to the failings of US policymaking, a new plan is needed in order to humanly handle issues of migration. Addressing the root causes by working with domestic actors would be more effective than Biden’s current plan of giving money to Central America and the canceling the #MPP
