X : Can you have feedback loops on maps?
Me : Sure. Why not?
X : Example?
Me : Ok, a completely made up example just for you - onlinewardleymaps.com/#RKlCASwJsBMdP…
X : Climate change is a model, solar power is a thing ... how do you mix the two.
Me : Remember this table. The x-axis are labels for stage I to IV ...
Me : So, for example ... I can pick a different axis. In this case, the axis of knowledge - onlinewardleymaps.com/#RKlCASwJsBMdP… ... it's the same thing. All stage I to IV, just different labels.
X : When do you use that?
Me : Personally? When mapping out scientific knowledge. It's useful to know the relationships between components of knowledge and what supports what but also to know how evolved the components of knowledge are. Did you think all science is the same?
Me : Science is a chain of components as much as ethical values in a collective are or the supply chain in an economic system. You can map them all if you wish to do so.
X : Why don't people do this?
Me : Why didn't Vikings use maps before they had sun stones and maps?
X : I'm not sure I follow.
Me : Before Vikings had sun stones and maps they used epic tales for navigation (i.e. stories). We're in the story phase of economics, politics and scientific knowledge. We're only just starting to learn how to map.
X : How do you know if your map is right?
Me : It's about communication. This is super quick map (it took 14 minutes) on electricity generation. It's very imperfect but it invites discussion, it allows others to add missing components, feedback loops - onlinewardleymaps.com/#pve4dt3NvMlS4…
Me : From the map, I can assert that the focus and most effort should probably be on solar / wind plus storage and increasing understanding of supply chains whereas carbon capture should play second fiddle.
X : How do you know if that's right?
Me : Not the point ...
Me : ... someone else can take the map and say I'm missing insulation (and given that it is a highly industrialised industry then it's probably a really cheap option) etc. The point is the discussion and this can be done very rapidly. Much harder to do with stories.
X : You're missing a link between ...
Me : ... bingo! We're off to the races. I got a group of brexiteers and remainers who couldn't stand each other and would constantly fight over whose story was right to talk to each other through the medium of maps. Don't underestimate this.
X : Have you seen the map in the Net Zero report?
Me : Really.
X : There you go.
Me : Ah. That's a graph not a map. It's ok but not a great deal of use in focusing on a changing landscape. You really need to use a map. Still, it's better than nothing.
X : I don't understand.
Me : With a map, space has meaning. In a graph, it doesn't. If you're trying to understand a landscape (physical, economic, political, business, technological or social) then understanding space is really important.
X : Is there a reason the lines don't have arrows?
Me : Limitation of the tool ... or more importantly I haven't found out how to do that on the tool ... these were quick examples. I'm sure the tool will develop further as people explore mapping.
X : Carbon capture should be two columns to the left.
Me : Bingo ... that's the point of maps. Sharing knowledge in a common framework and discussion about the space.
X : I'm not sure I understand the point of evolution on this?
Me : Ok, take renewable energy. Do you think tidal, wind and solar power are all equally evolved? Those things which are not well evolved (i.e. carbon capture) are inherently going to be more costly and risky.
Me : It's a bit like spaceflght and this is a map that was used in NASA's carbon mapper project. You need to think about how evolved components are and what you can shift to effectively manage something. Same with climate change.

X : Thoughts on cloud repatriation?
Me : Zynga? Good luck.
X : No, Dropbox.
Me : Ok, in extremely rare, specialised and massive scale cases there could be an argument for it. However, the jury is still out on this. Are you the scale of dropbox with their specialist needs?
X : No.
Me : Fine. Well, in which case the same economics won't be at play. The positive argument won't exist.
X : No argument for in-house then?
Me : No. Inertia due to pre-existing capital or unwillingness of executive to change the system (i.e. too close to retirement) etc.
X : Not very positive.
Me : No, those reasons aren't but they exist and so you have to be mindful of it. In some cases you have to compromise to an enormous extent just to get some change happening. This is ok, as long as you are honest about it and don't hoodwink yourself.

X : Thoughts on return to office?
Me : From a business perspective I would always look to adapt to the future rather than try to recreate the past whenever possible. Image
X : What about coffee shops and commercial property prices?
Me : Eh? Is your company a coffee shop or an investor in commercial property?
X : Insurance.
Me : So, why do you care then? You should be focused on what matters for your business and how your business adapts.
X : Where's that table from?
Me : You mean the text? It's from this report - leadingedgeforum.turtl.co/story/on-indus… ... it's not a table though. If you want a table, try this list of behavioural changes. Image

Raab calls for a kinder politics - huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/dominic-… ... good, but this must include mainstream media. Who can forget that vile headline of "Labour must kill Vampire Jezza" ... pressreader.com/uk/the-scottis… Image
The pursuit of "kinder" politics should be a driving force for us all and not just in words between politicians but in action across society i.e. the £20 reduction in UC must be reversed, austerity must never return and we need a stronger social support structure in place.
X : Why mainstream?
Me : Elements of mainsteam media can be a major source of vile and vitriol in our society. We need to stop funding this hate -

A fascinating example of narrative, creation and teaching methods all in one. It is quite amazing ->
X : Why so amazing?
Me : It's something @snowded reinforced at Map Camp yesterday. The examples of continuous small efforts in creating momentum to create change in a system. @snowded is always spot on with this stuff.
X : What's that got to do with videos?
Me : It's not really about videos, it's about art (whether videos or video games or whatever) and it's ability to influence societal values and hence power structures.
X : I don't get that map.
Me : You don't need to. All you need to understand is we change society through art.

X : Blah, blah, blah, business leader.
Me : Business leader?
X : Yes, that's what I am.
Me : The ability to lead people that you pay to be lead by you?
X : No, I give direction.
Me : Would anyone follow you if you weren't paying them? I think business manager might be more apt.
X : I am a leader.
Me : In a very loose sense of the word. I could argue that I am beautiful by paying a thousand people to say so ... doesn't make it true. I understand where you're going but I wouldn't go around calling yourself a business leader. What's wrong with manager?
X : I am more than a manager.
Me : So it's not about the role and what you do, it's about ego?
X : No, it's about the simple truth that I lead.
Me : Gosh, nothing simple in this. How many ways can we unpack this. I better not.
X : Why?
Me : I'll cause more harm than good.

Asked about pipeines in maps ... as simple as I can
You can think of pipelines as categories for many evolving components that we have choice over (i.e. substitution) ... for example, content in entertainment (i.e. films).
X : Isn't power a commodity?
Me : Hell's bells. I'm showing you an example to explain the meaning of a pipeline. Fair point though. Is this clearer?
