This was so there would be a better immune response to the spike protein OF THE VACCINE, rather than to prevent the spike protein from binding to an ACE2 receptor of a cell.
It is also interesting to note that the spike protein is referred formally as a MUTATION called SP2. The variants, such as Delta, have mutated spike proteins which render inoperative the immune response of the vaccine.
