I'm back covering this two-day court hearing in Scotland, which could lead to Donald Trump being subjected to an anti-money laundering "unexplained wealth order."

Today, we heard from the Scottish govt.

(Here's the preview @thedailybeast ran Tuesday.)

thedailybeast.com/a-scottish-jud…
@thedailybeast Quick recap:

2014: Trump bought Trump Turnberry *in cash*
2017: UK got a new investigative tool forcing rich, politically connected people to explain suspicious purchases
2019: @Avaaz demands Scotland uses one on Trump, govt resists
2021: It sues to force govt to use this tool
@thedailybeast @Avaaz Today, the barrister representing the govt laid out why it's not up to the country's leader, @NicolaSturgeon.

Instead, that decision is up to country's top prosecutor, she says.

And the govt doesn't want to be forced to say whether it plans to seek a Trump investigation or not.
@thedailybeast @Avaaz @NicolaSturgeon The govt barrister makes clear that Scotland's ministers take anti-money laundering seriously -- in general.

"I'm not going to stand here and say they're going to do nothing."

But "unexplained wealth orders" are new territory, and how it's supposed to be used isn't clear yet.
@thedailybeast @Avaaz @NicolaSturgeon Scottish govt is highly resistant to tipping their hand here, arguing that it shouldn't even answer questions about use of UWOs.

Curiously, it's borrowing the CIA's infamous "Glomar response."

You know it even if you don't know you know it:

"We can neither confirm nor deny."
@thedailybeast @Avaaz @NicolaSturgeon Counterpoint by the barrister for the nonprofit watchdog, Avaaz:

"There is a duty of candor" by a public authority "because we're all in this together."

Can I... quote this in my future public records requests? US government agencies, you're on notice.
@thedailybeast @Avaaz @NicolaSturgeon Okay, hearing has wrapped up. Judge said he'll "issue the judgement as soon as is reasonably practicable."

Soon enough we'll know if Trump's headaches in Scotland are about to get worse.
@thedailybeast @Avaaz @NicolaSturgeon (After two days of this, I gotta say I know more about the UK's Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 than I ever thought I'd know.)

Today & tomorrow I'll be covering a court fight in Scotland that could subject Trump to a financial colonoscopy.

Here's a preview:

thedailybeast.com/a-scottish-jud…
The nonprofit @avaaz wants the Scottish govt to use a new anti-money laundering tool to look into the Trump Turnberry golf course.

Scotland's leader, @NicolaSturgeon, has resisted that.

At the hearing this morning so far, both sides have just begun to lay out their positions.
It's a new investigative tool for the UK, so this case asks fundamental questions:

Whose responsibility is it to deploy an "unexplained wealth order?"

And is the Scottish govt under an obligation to use one? Against Trump?

Lord Sandison, the judge, is going to figure that out

Exclusive: The feds just arrested a 30-year-old wealthy Republican operative in Minneapolis. Investigation found that he preyed on young girls.

Indictment claims there were 6 victims.

He sounded beaten down in court. But when I called him last month...

thedailybeast.com/gop-strategist…
... Anton Lazzaro threatened me directly for reporting this story.

He repeatedly assured me: "It's not some Matt Gaetz or whatever you think this is."

Well, let's see about that.
The FBI raided this guy's condo in Minneapolis back in December. Feds wanted video proof of who he was taking in and out.

When I asked him about that, he told me he'd buy domain names with my name... and post audio of our conversation, which he secretly recorded.

Breaking news: Biden's DOJ will continue to defend Trump in the defamation case that accuses him of raping journalist E. Jean Carroll.

It argues Trump should get immunity... and taxpayers should pick up the tab.

thedailybeast.com/biden-doj-will…
The Justice Department is trying to walk a fine line here. Right up at the top of its filing tonight, it draws this distinction.
But throughout its brief, the DOJ reiterates that Trump was very much doing his job when he essentially called E. Jean Carroll a liar.

Some folks are surprised at the level of detail in our exposés on Matt Gaetz & crew.

I'll use the latest story @SollenbergerRC & I did together as an example.

Time for a thread!

thedailybeast.com/the-shock-jock…
We first heard about "Big Joe" in late March, when @ktbenner broke the story on the DOJ investigating Gaetz.

We immediately started reaching out. Surely, Gaetz's wingman's bestie knows something right?
Multiple sources confirmed that yes, "Big Joe" tagged along with Gaetz's buddy for years. They cohosted a radio show, partied together, and even worked together.

We've spoken to maybe a dozen people who knew them personally.

But how far did this go?

Breaking news in Brooklyn federal court just now:

US govt reveals Eduard Florea - a Proud Boy in Queens who threatened to kill people in DC - was arrested and found with:

More than 1,000 rounds of rifle ammo
2 dozen shotgun rounds
75 combat knives
2 hatchets
2 swords
Prosecutor: "This is not just idle talk. This is talk supported by action."

Florea traveled to DC with other Proud Boys in December and was with them when they vandalized a Black church
Feds note his membership in an extremist organization as reason for keeping him behind bars until trial.

Breaking news: Federal judge shuts down NYC police unions' attempt to block public release of misconduct records.
Judge Polk says unions failed to show that publishing records of discipline would cause irreparable harm to officers' reputation or safety.
Judge was swayed by a simple argument: How much harm could there be if 16 other states already make this kind of info public?

(This is a common theme in 2020, as New York finally joins other states w/ DA sharing of exculpatory evidence & bail reform.)
