According to neuroscience, rejection is PAIN.

A thread 🧡 on how to deal with rejections in life.

Share it with someone who is having a hard time with rejections!πŸ‘‡
1/ Our aversion to β€œrejection” traces back to millions of years of evolution.

Our ancestors used to protect their survival by being in close groups, so that dangers can be avoided easily.

Being rejected by group members posed a potential threat to their survival……
2/ & hence it was perceived as being painful.

This feeling of pain was healthy because the rejected members tried to reduce this pain by finding ways to get included in the group, thereby securing their survival once more.

Fast forward to the modern era……..

5 steps to come up with research questions for graduate school applicationsπŸ“‘

WITH EXAMPLES πŸ’πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Read till the end to know how I derived impressive research questions that won me multiple internships (Max Planck) & scholarships (Swiss Government)

Retweet widely! πŸ”
1 β–£ Start with downloading 2-3 research papers & read them in detail.

No short-cuts while reading the first 2-3 papers.

Understand them thoroughly (esp. method & discussion)

If you don’t understand something, go to:

β€’ seniors
β€’ your own prof
β€’ author(s) of the paper
I started with this paper & understood it in DETAIL.

The initial papers took me 2-3 days per paper, but after the first 5 papers, I could read 2-3 papers a day.

Moral: Spend more time in the beginning to save time later on.

Cold-emails to profs aren’t the only emails you’re going to send for graduate school applications.

This is a list of people you must email in the journey of your applications

β€’ Program/Department Chairperson πŸ€΅β€β™€οΈπŸ€΅

You can ask them a couple of crucial things like:

β€’ The culture/atmosphere of the program

β€’ Mental health support resources

β€’ Grievance/Complaints redressal

You can talk about why you are particularly interested in this prog.
This will increase the chances that not only your prof, but also the chair of the program will remember you from before during the selection process.

This is a positive thing for your application πŸ’ͺ🏼

β€’ Graduate school coordinator:

Ask them about-

β€’ Fee waivers πŸ“

Has your graduate school application been rejected? πŸ“„

There are two steps you can take after the rejection letter.

A short thread 🧡 on how to turn a rejection to your advantage

Amplify @Oludeewon @baba_Omoloro @AaronAkpuPhilip @OpenAcademics @PhDfriendSana @AcademicChatter
1/ Context: Although I was not rejected from this graduate program, I was offered an offer without guaranteed funding.

This meant that I was expected to look for funding on my own during my PhD or until my PI received a grant that he could use to pay me.
2/ Such an offer was obviously very stressful so I didn’t join this program.

Now, I had two options

β€’ Forget about this application and apply for other schools.

β€’ Utilize my relationship with the PI (who agreed to accept me in my cold-email) to understand…….
