SaaS revolutionalized how software is built, delivered, and consumed.

But, 99% of the people in SaaS don't realize SaaS itself is getting disrupted.

Huge career implications.

Here is what anyone working in software should know 👇 vertical saas eating horizontal saas
Most of the SaaS companies today are Horizontal SaaS (hSaaS).

In 10 yrs, many such companies will be disrupted by Vertical SaaS (vSaaS).

✅ Pick Vertical SaaS for career growth

Here's why👇
1/ hSaaS vs vSaaS - the difference?

hSaaS - Generic software that mainly solves 1 problem and serves multiple industries. Eg - CRM, Payroll software

vSaaS - Highly specific solution that serves 1 niche industry and focuses on workflow automation. Eg - Veeva @ $600M ARR
2/ What's wrong with hSaaS?

Each industry has unique workflows.

• Sales process that is unique
• Pricing its services that is specific
• Customer touchpoints that are unique
• Types of data captured that is specific

hSaaS has no awareness of any of the above.
3/ Implication to customer

Companies spend a lot of "human time" figuring out how to customize each step, integrate various parts and make it work.

❌ Larger headcount → $$
❌ Frustrated employees → low CSAT
❌ Mistakes due to data staleness → $$

Is there a better solution?
4/ Enter vSaaS

vSaaS focuses on the customer's ENTIRE workflow.

💡 Vertically integrate and automate the entire workflow → Drive outsized RoI for the customer.
5/ How vSaaS works?

Everything is customized:

✅ Unique sales process → Customized CRM

✅ Specific pricing → Customized pricing engine

✅ Unique touchpoints → Customized user experience

✅ Specific data needs → Customized database design/capture
6/ vSaaS enable insane ROI for the customer

✅ Integration of workflow → Lower headcount

✅ Satisfied customers → high CSAT/NPS

✅ Data accuracy → Lower waste from mistakes
7/ vSaaS drives huge competitive moat

All the customizations become a competitive advantage

Become mission-critical for your customer!

✅ For the customer to quit you, they have to find an alternative that replaces the entire process → Insane LTV
8/ vSaaS is more capital efficient

Being in a niche simplifies GTM.

Marketing, Sales can be super focused on the niche market.

✅ A Smaller team is needed → Faster profitability.

e.g. @veevasystems only raised $7M, spent only $3M, got profitable and grew to $600M+ ARR
9/ vSaaS grows TAM by replicating the process across adjacent verticals

After vertically integrating workflow in 1 industry, look for adjacent industries with similar workflows.

E.g. Yembo (I'm CEO) is building the cloud for all home services (moving, painting, insurance).
10/ tl;dr

• Vertical SaaS is going to eat Horizontal SaaS
• Joining a hSaaS company in the 2020's is like joining an on-prem company in 2010's
• Many hSaaS companies that will outlast this decade will evolve into vSaaS - e.g. Rippling
Achieving Product-Market fit in vSaaS is different/more challenging than hSaaS.

I've studied many successful vSaaS companies - there is 1 primary approach to P/M fit (and one that I'm also using at Yembo)

"How to Get Rich (without getting lucky)" from @naval 10x'd my career and life.

I've shared the thread and podcast with several of my friends.

Here are 10 lessons that I incorporated (and you should too!) 🧵...
1/ Stop consuming content from zero-sum people.

This is equivalent to eating junk food.

On Twitter, I UNfollowed all politicians, trending topics. You should too!
2/ Get your information directly from the source

I used to read Techcrunch, Recode for my Tech news.

But this also is equivalent to eating junk food (written by people without domain expertise)

So, I actively block marketing sites designed as news.

I had a panic attack during my first ever presentation due to stage fright.

It crushed my self-confidence.

Today, I can deliver a great presentation even at 2 a.m.

Here are 7 steps that I took (and you can too!) to present with confidence 🧵...
1/ Find intrinsic motivation

The panic attack incident created a chip on my shoulder.

I thought - if another person can do it, why couldn't I?

I now had something to prove ... to myself. This was a strong motivator.
2/ Learn Storytelling

I didn't want to improve by 10%, I was shooting for 10,000x

This meant going back to the basics - storytelling.

Learnt from several resources. Two best:
• Resonate by @nancyduarte
• Pixar's storytelling workshop (will Tweet link to material soon)

So, you want to

• Close sales deals
• Get hired
• Make great exec presentations
• Book demos
• Stand out

Here is a tactic used by the top 1% of people:

Create a S.T.A.R ("Something They'll Always Remember") Moment

It works 100% of the time!

Let me show you 👇
S.T.A.R Moment from one of our star engineers

Her technical interview went well (credibility established)

But what she did after blew our minds!

She hand sketched the Yembo AI robot in her thank you note.

Was so unique, we stopped interviewing others, made offer the same day! ImageImage
A current employee was working for one of our customers.

She was responsible for the Yembo implementation.

The internal team was complaining.

So she made Yuumbo chocolates (Yum!) to get them to give her a chance.

When she was looking to leave, we automatically hired her. Image

As CEO, I've read 1000's of job applications.

But 99.9% of these applications suck - they are undifferentiated, boring, and irrelevant.

Follow these 7 steps for a guaranteed interview call 👇
1/ Quality over quantity

Biggest mistake I see: Mass applying to jobs with 0 research. This is the fastest way to get blocked.

Spend a minimum 30 minutes per app researching the company.

Learn the problem they are solving.

Learn how they are solving.
2/ Write a 2 sentence elevator pitch

Why do you want to work here? What excites you? - write a 2 sentence elevator pitch

What should excite them about you? - Write another 2 sentence elevator pitch

Example below 👇

The Twitter header photo is the most underutilized asset

I’ve followed many within seconds - solely due to their banner

I realized, I am losing opportunities without a customized header photo

Put your header photo to work!

Here are 7 banners I learnt from to create mine...🧵
1/ @dharmesh

Why I followed within seconds -

• Established credibility immediately
• Content topics clearly visible (and relevant to me)
• Super friendly/approachable tone

Bonus: Have a lot of inspiration for my V2 header banner!
2/ @abarrallen

I was already following Allison. I sent her banner to my designer.

Why?

• Elevator pitch is precise
• Great visual design highlighting the product value

After my last post, many people asked why I'm suddenly active on Twitter

I'll credit this to someone I haven't met - @balajis

I'm kicking myself for not building on Twitter earlier.

🧵 Here are the 3 main reasons why I started and why everyone (especially founders) should...
1/ "Failure to build an audience is like failing to build a website. It's a necessary task" - @balajis

Share your message unfiltered by going direct.

Become your own champion.

I've seen too many founders misquoted, for another's individual benefit.

2/ "Build a like-minded community in the cloud" - @balajis

Twitter has been amazing for me.

I've made critical company decisions, just based on what I've learnt here (more on this coming later).

Seriously, can't believe this site is free.
