The Beauty and Wonder of Worship

2) The image above is NOT a worldly image. It is not cynical. It is not sophisticated. There is a famous Democrat attack against fly-over country Republicans, as being smelly Walmart customers. I am a proud, smelly Walmart customer.

3) I know that Walmart itself, as a corporation, is compromised. I know it is a retail outlet for Made In China products. Slowly, I'm learning to look for such products and NOT buy them. But Walmart is bigger than its corporate bigwigs. It is part of true America.

4) Here's Obama on same topic:

"And it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

5) I may do a thread on that statement at some point. But for now, let's just pull out its five points:

1) Cling to Guns
2) Or Religion
3) Or Antipathy to People who Aren't Like Them
4) Or Anti-trade Sentiment
5) To Explain their Frustrations

6) I'll let go of Obama's hellacious assertions in a moment. But I have to say, no one needs to explain his frustrations. Normal people don't feel such a need. They don't have to justify the fact that they know something is wrong. Moving on...

7) I find I must intrude myself and my beliefs and disbeliefs into such analysis frequently. If there were such a thing as Atheistic Christianity, that is what I'd be. Technically, and very uncomfortably, I am an atheist. More an agnostic, but why mince words?

8) As a more comfortably stated agnostic, I am allowed to confess, to profess that I do not know. More, that I may be wrong. I am allowed to be wrong. It may well indeed be that the Christian God hears this wonderful boy's prayer. My belief is not required for that to be true.

9) As a formerly angry, strident, and accusatory atheist, I am completely capable of focusing on the missing children. How does an almighty and loving God allow this evil to persist? You can't hit me with free will as the answer. You won't win that argument.

10) And then there's this wonderful, beautiful boy, praying to the God in whom he has perfect faith, right there, in Walmart. I am so proud of him my heart bursts. I know that boy. I was once that boy myself. I would have done that. I'm proud of that.

11) We will discuss religious freedom again. That is not today's brief, although it is so closely tied. This boy, praying in Walmart over all the lost children, asking God for his help and protection over these so-many beautiful children at risk and in harm, that is America.

12) Matthew 19:14 "But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven."

13) This I say unto you, as long as there are little children who will kneel and pray to God Almighty in Walmart, beneath the missing children's list, America is, remains, and will always be a light unto the world. That boy is us. He is the U.S. Cynical world, take a look.

14) I cannot do it, myself. That is, my recommendation here which follows. But, if you're a true-believing Christian please consider my recommendation. Find a Walmart near yourself. Find their missing children's list. Kneel and pray, there, as does this little boy.

15) I say Christian as that is what I know. But a Jew, a Moslem, a Buddhist too may of course do the same. A Pagan, a Wiccan, all are allowed. That is religious freedom. We may all pray. Even me to the gods in whom I do not believe. I too may pray, and I do.

16) I am not allowed to do so in public, my beliefs and disbeliefs disallow. But in private I am allowed. My prayer is far more, over such matters, a form of spiritual weeping. I weep over the lost children and the monsters who have stolen them.

17) My prayer is also a dream. Once upon a time, slavery was a legal institution. We still have vast millions of the enslaved. But, it is no longer legally blessed as it was for so many millennia before. That is progress.

18) I dream of a day when perfect freedom rings its bell across all humanity, the day the last slave is freed and no soul will ever be enslaved again. I dream of a day when all our children are safe. All. Each and every one of them. All of them. None in danger of evil.

19) My son Nicholas, when he was 12, went to Japan for two weeks in connection with a school for autism his younger brother attended. Wow. What a story that is! Not for today, though. In Japan, he discovered an amazing thing.

20) He discovered that small children were allowed to ride public transportation trains and busses alone for the following reason. Every adult holds responsibility for every child, not by law, but by cultural value. Each adult must protect any, every child. Amazing.

21) It will be Thanksgiving in two days. Shortly after follows Christmas. Christmas is about the divine perfection embodied in every child. Christmas is that moment where we see God Himself in the souls of our newborn babies. How beautiful is that?

22) For all my atheistic piety, I never did master that art of teaching my children to pray. I can teach them to dream. And I do. Prayer is more complex for me, and remains just outside my pedagogical reach. I don't know how to teach it.

23) But I do know how to observe it. I do know how to worship on the altar of the worshipper's blessing. And if you can grant it me, I believe in worship. I believe in that praying, worshipping boy in Walmart. I believe in him. I worship with him.

24) On a purely practical basis, I ask this of you. Share this boy with the world. Claim him. Show the world that he is our America in truth and verity. He represents us at our best, but also at our deepest. He is who we are. A cynical world will struggle with that, of course.

25) Let them, nay, force them into their struggle. We have evil doers among us, monsters who steal our children. We have righteous among us, boys who pray for protection for the children in need. America punishes evil and empowers righteousness. That is who we are.
