📢BREAKING

🧵1/ The German🇩🇪 Coalition government has just released its draft coalition government agreement in which it would commit to observing the first meeting of states parties of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. #nuclearban #ampel #koalitionsvertrag
2/By attending as observers, 🇩🇪 would be taking a first step in following the will of the German people. Recent polls say that the vast majority of voters across democratic parties (83%) support the TPNW and oppose acquisition of nuclear capable aircraft. #nuclearban
3/ This news follows last month’s decision by Norway🇳🇴 to participate at the first MSP and firmly indicates that there should be no conflict with the TPNW for Nato member states. More are sure to follow. #TPNW1MSP

4/ Both @Die_Gruenen @spdde acknowledged the importance of the #nuclearban treaty in their coalition agreements, while the @fdp also indicated its support for observing during the election campaign.
5/ 136 German cities (representing 30% of the population) want the German government to support the TPNW. Amongst those are all 16 state capitals, led by coalitions across the entire democratic spectrum. icanw.de/ican-staedteap…
6/ This would not have been possible without the work of the @ican_de network who have worked relentlessly on growing the support for the #nuclearban in Germany, despite the previous government’s resistance. 👏👏🇩🇪

🧵1/ The opening for signature of the #CTBT 25 years ago was incredibly important for int'l peace and security after decades of nuclear testing with catastrophic humanitarian consequences. As states meet today at the UN Security Council, they must act to bring it into force‼️
2/ The #CTBT established the first international ban on underground and atmospheric nuclear testing and created an international monitoring system for nuclear tests. It has near universal support and has perpetuated a global moratorium on nuclear testing➡️ctbto.org/the-treaty/
3/Survivors of nuclear weapons use and testing have played a key role in achieving both the #CTBT and #nuclearban which complements the CTBT’s ban on testing and includes landmark provisions to assist survivors of nuclear tests and to begin to remediate contaminated environments.

1/ 🇷🇺 and 🇺🇸 are meeting in Geneva today to launch a new bilateral dialogue on nuclear weapons and strategic stability. These talks are welcome, but the gravity of the nuclear threat means they must lead to real and substantial nuclear weapons reductions.
reuters.com/world/russia-u…
2/ The majority of the world’s nations support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and Russia and the United States should take steps to come into compliance with this landmark agreement.
3/ The risk of nuclear weapons use has never been higher and the only way to eliminate this risk is to eliminate nuclear weapons. Presidents Putin and Biden must seize this chance to agree to reduce their stockpiles and make progress towards nuclear disarmament.

Unacceptable! Today, the UK government is expected to announce that it will increase its nuclear weapon stockpile cap by 40% - to 260 nuclear warheads. icanw.org/uk_to_increase… Here are 5 reasons why this is such a shocking move (thread)
#1 The UK has 215 nuclear weapons right now, with each warhead estimated to have an explosive power of 100 kilotons or 15x Hiroshima. The UN has said the risk of nuclear weapons use - intentionally or by accident - is higher than ever. These weapons do not make us safe.
#2 Nuclear weapons are illegal now (h/t #nuclearban). Increasing stockpiles violates international law. Every year that nuclear-armed states continue to possess and build nuclear weapons, they must be held responsible for putting the world at risk of a humanitarian catastrophe.

What can you do to get your government to join the #nuclearban treaty? Our great partners in the DRC have been on a roll! @CrispalAfrique held an awareness-raising workshop with authorities and called on the government to ratify without delay #thread
They even made the headlines on TV news
📺 Bravo, @CrispalAfrique @MATUKJp @RLubulu @Pierrinaa
Our DRC partners also work with faith groups, @CENCO__RDC, parliamentarians and more to support the treaty. @concern_women brought a group of 10 national @AssembleeN_RDC deputies together to work on the DRC's ratification & make great statements like this one by @MoiseNyarugabo

Amazing news to kick off the weekend: we have not one but TWO ratifications of the #nuclearban treaty, Comoros & the Philippines!👏 Great show of support, a little under a month since the treaty entered into force. Congratulations to all involved @DFAPHL @MaeciDiplomatie #thread
Next to ratifying the #TPNW, Comoros also ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty #CTBT, highlighting just how strongly they support a world without nuclear weapons & the complementary nature of the treaties. @Azali_officiel @Beit_Salam @MaeciDiplomatie @ctbto_alerts
The Philippines was among the first countries to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons back in 2017. It said then: “If we listen to each other, we will hear the same thing: We have no need for nuclear weapons.”
