As a virus continues to spread, it gains opportunities to mutate. This happens in any species as part of reproduction, and some mutations are good for it, others bad for it, and others bad for us.
The emergence of 'variants' such as delta and omicron are those that have mutations that have enabled greater survival. This means that they have adapted more to the environment, including the vaccines.
This is not new, and happens with the flu (which is why we have boosters yearly,) but with Covid, due to its lethality and spread, it is much more dangerous. But why is it so dangerous?
1) It has a higher mortality rate with vulnerable adults, including those of older age/ w/diabetes/ 2) Admissions means bed/staff/resource use, so treatment of other conditions is delayed i.e you cant treat your cancer patient if there are no beds and covid is worse for them
3) Public misinformation and rumours, confusion with 'freedoms' and the idiot words of commentators have misled us into thinking this is all an over-reaction. Chris Whitty showed us tonight that is wrong.
4) Vaccines are not perfect. This is new technology for a new threat. But the risks of not taking it, for most of us, are higher than taking it, and especially helpful in protecting those that cannot.
There is a temptation to fall into rebellion over all of this. It sucks. But its a virus, it does not care. We are doing our best, but we need to do more. And here, in this thread particularly, it starts with responsibility.
GB news, Laurence Fox, Darren Grimes etc are not doctors. Their freedom of speech is not limited either. And this gives them a special privilege to chat shit without any responsibility for the impact.
Masks work, they do not cause suffocation, or else 50 years of surgery would have failed. Vaccines work, the risk of death is much much lower. Lockdowns are such, but they are very effective. Any delay in treating covid - means a delay to treating everything.
I work in mental health, I have seen the impact, but believe me, the impact of dying, losing family, or longer lockdowns will not help. This is a monster we need to face head-on, and the quicker we kill it the better.
I write here because Laurence attracts people who fight back against this view. That's fine, I support your right, but please look at the data. Don't be swayed by this faux nationalism and false protection. This man prays at fallen masks, not people.
Yes, pharma may make money, that's capitalism for you, but so do seatbelt makers and those who create fire-extinguishers. There is always money in services/products that help people. The presence of one does not remove the other.
This is a moment to make a choice. The rational and researched guidance endorsed by the medical establishment, or this guy here. Or Darren Grimes. Or GB news. Pick the right side here, these lot will just find another snake oil to sell.
PS: I am not paid to make these comments. I have no partnership with pharma. I am sat in my pyjamas after day shift on a covid + psychiatric ward. I am triple vaxxed, and feel damn fine.
No doubt Lozza will ignore this, or make some snippy comment, but remember what happened last time he tried this with me. Anger and spite won't win this, but listening and helping each other will.
And if you want to send me an angry message, tell me to kill myself, fuck off, etc (as is common,) just remember that I will be at work tomorrow and may be delayed in replying. We are all good people underneath, so let's show it.

What tires me most as NHS staff is that most of this is preventable.
Those refusing a vaccine that could save their (and others') lives are harming others and prolonging the pandemic as they paint themselves as the heroes. This is a juvenile fantasy.
Grow up, get jabbed.
Inb4 you are mean mr psychiatrist. Half of my ward has the infection. My patients are at a higher risk of severe illness. My words are less severe than death, get over it sunshine.
Oh and the bluetickbuffoons going on about nazi germany and freedom, go talk to a holocaust survivor about how a mask and vaccine is the same as Auschwitz. Stop insulting actual genocide survivors for retweets and sponsorships, plebs.
From an ontological standpoint, both psychoanalytic formulations and psychiatric diagnoses work on an estimate of categorical fluency between cases, to form a framework of workable ingress. It is not for either to claim moral authenticity over the other.
Even Laing would agree.
To proffer some level of deeper understanding is reasonable for the former, but this does not provide a tautology in moral reasoning, other than reductionism in a more specific form. Neither promotes a fair epistemology, only a translation by which work is done.
From a more superficial and ideological standpoint, I suggest that political conflict between the approaches is one of secondary narcissism, not a significant variation in practical application. One is not the tail of the other, but both the tail of the unicorn.
Let's take a moment to address some of the conspiracies around #covid19 using psychology and sociology. Thread/
First off, some basic ground theory to put this into context. Human beings work on a very primal level when emotions are high, using a number of cognitive shortcuts
Our emotions serve a primary purpose in survival, and as such they work fast in influencing our behaviour. These are very old, existing before the more clever aspects of our brains, and can be referred to as 'survival mechanisms.'
They evolved during a different time, where major threats were more simple. Aggression, starvation, predators. As such they needed to move quickly, creating fear, alliances based on protection, formation of groups (tribes.)
It has been a hard two years. Over 5 million have died, and daily new cases in the UK are over 40,000, with a much lower death rate than before. We can be thankful for this, but must think hard.
If we go back to the major waves, the death rates were much higher. There are multiple reasons for this, including a lower level of natural and vaccine-mediated resistance, and higher death rates in susceptible populations. The virus killed the most at risk.
We know this. Older age, obesity, ethnicity, presence of cancer, or other chronic issues all raised the risk. Although the overall death risk was small, higher risks in large populations still added up. For me, a 33-year-old, it's low, but for my grandma, the risk is intolerable.
Mosaics are quite incredible. Not only do they present contemporary representations of culture that teach us about the past, but also show just how much passion there is for expression. Using sediment to create a totality, quite astonishing.
If anything, these remind me of the mandala approach to unconscious expressionism, not so much in the artistic design, but the time is taken and the knowledge that such things, by nature, are impermanent. This is an expression of the duality of mankind, a brief fire in the dark.
Regardless of the aesthetic appeal, we have to remember that art, from a Jungian perspective, is what unites us and forms the sublimation of our shared fears, loves, and phantasy. With mosaics, we listen to Yeats when he says 'tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
No, not at all. You say that because then you can paint me as an elitist and make yourself seem a hero. Its very obvious, and no matter how much you bluff and try to shame me, your technique is obvious. Its an insult to the intelligence of your following to mislead them so.
If I felt people were beneath me, I would not engage with them. If I felt those who had different views were lesser than me, why would I talk to them as equals? All you accuse me of, you do yourself. You set yourself up like the messiah, the defender of the meek..
And im glad that your words help people, and that others find solace in your confidence. But if there is one thing I have learned, it is that often compromise and caution are more respectful and giving than bluster. Neither of us are heroes, so perhaps accept it.
