Modi govt has decided to increase the age of marriage for women to 21. This is typical paternalism that we have come to expect from the govt. 18 year old men & women can sign contracts, start businesses, choose Prime Ministers & elect MPs & MLAs but not marry? 1/n
They can consent to sexual relationships and live-in partnerships but cannot choose their life partners? Just ridiculous.
Both men & women should be allowed to legally marry at 18 as they’re treated as adults by the law for all other purposes 2/n
Child marriages are rampant despite a law. Every fourth woman in India was married before turning 18 but only 785 criminal cases of child marriages were recorded. If child marriages have reduced from before, it’s due to education & economic progress, not criminal law 3/n
There are 12m kids married before they even turned 10. 84% of these are from Hindu families & only 11% are Muslim. This clearly points to the fact that social reform and government initiatives in education & human development are critical to preventing child marriages 4/n
More than legal age of marriage, it is improved education & better economic prospects for youngsters, that impacts when they marry. 45% of poorest households had child marriages; only 10% of wealthiest households did so 5/n
If Modi was sincere, he would have focused on increasing economic opportunities for women. Yet India is the only country where women’s participation in workforce is dwindling. It fell to 16% in 2020 from 26% in 2005. 6/n
It’s essential to improve their educational outcomes to ensure autonomous decision-making. What has the govt done to improve education for girls? 79% of ₹446.72 Beti Bachao Beti Padhao budget was spent on adverts. You want us to believe that this govt has sincere intentions? 7/n
Men & women are treated as adults at 18 for most critical things. Why is marriage any different? The legal age is not really a criteria; the essential goal must be to ensure education, economic progress & human development 9/n
Supreme Court recognised right to privacy as a fundamental right for adults. The autonomy to take decisions concerning oneself are critical to this fundamental right. This includes the right to choose a partner & the right to decide if/when to have children 10/n
In many US states, marriage age is as low as 14. In UK & Canada, it’s 16. In NZ, 16-19 year olds can marry with parental consent. These nations improved human development of young people so that they can take INFORMED decisions rather than fixing arbitrary age restrictions 10/n
In contrast, Modi govt acts like a Mohalla Uncle. Deciding what we eat, who/when we marry, what God we worship, etc
Ironically, govt proposes 18 as age of consent in Data Bill. If 18-year olds can choose how their data is used, why can’t they choose their life partners? 11/n
It’s time to stop thinking of young people as children in perpetuity. They should be allowed the space to think & decide for themselves. This is also why I’ve proposed a private members’ bill that will allow 20 year olds to become MPs & MLAs. 12/n

THREAD: 1. Govt wants to amend Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. The amendment will allow Central govt to create a unified database of all registered births & deaths. Currently, this is carried out by states. But now Union will be allowed to collect data
2. The unified database will be used for NPR-NRC, electoral rolls, passports, etc. Currently, these are all separate processes. For example, electoral roll enrolment is done by an INDEPENDENT body, ECI. Now Union govt can allow birth/death register to be used for enrolment
This violates Article 324 of the Constitution that gives independence to ECI. It also violates the Constitution as the NPR rules are themselves unconstitutional and data should not be collected under it.
1. As usual, RSS Mohan’s speech today was full of lies & half-truths. He called for a population policy & repeated the lie that Muslim & Christian population has increased. Muslim population growth rate has had the sharpest decline among all. There’s no ‘demographic imbalance’1/n
What one has to worry about are the social evils of child marriages & sex-selective abortions. 84% of married kids are Hindus. Between 2001-2011, Muslim female-male ratio leaped from 936 to 951 women for every 1000 Muslim men. But, the Hindu ratio only rose from 931 to 939 2/n
India has already achieved replacement level fertility rates. Without any coercive population policy
2. Similarly, fact-free Mohan is worried about India’s ageing population & the need to have younger population to help the ageing. He should tell his student Modi about it. 3/n
Sir @rajnathsingh you said that Savarkar’s grovelling mercy petitions were on Gandhi’s advise.
1. Here’s the letter to Savarkar from Gandhi. No mention of petition to British begging for leniency, mercy & promising to be a faithful servant of the crown. 1/n
2. First petition Savarkar wrote was in 1911, JUST 6 months after getting to prison. Gandhi was then in South Africa. Savarkar wrote again in 1913/14. Gandhi’s advise is from 1920
3. Is it a lie that this “Veer” rejected tricolour & wanted Bhagva as our flag? (July 1947) 2/n
4. In your speech yesterday, you mentioned that Savarkar defined Hindu as anyone for whom India was fatherland or motherland. However, Savarkar, as a man of limited intellectual prowess had actually defined Hindu as someone for whom India was fatherland AND holy Land.

Modi’s speech on human rights at #NHRC today exposed his problematic & incorrect understanding of human rights. Most unfortunate part was that there was only one passing mention of the constitution, but references to ‘tradition’, ‘culture’ & religion could be found throughout.
1. A constant Hindutva talking point was repeated by Modi; that human rights & duties are dependent on each other. No. Rights against state always trump duties. Duties are not enforceable, rights are.
People in power failed to discharge their duties. This resulted in a deadly second wave where people died without vaccines, oxygen & hospital beds
The statements after the latest round of talks with #China clearly show that they’ll continue to remain on Indian territory & @PMOIndia can do nothing. Sad that a new status quo has been created on LAC. This denies our forces access to the areas they traditionally patrolled. 1/
This loss of control over our territory to China has been on for 20 months, but Parliament has not been briefed in detail nor have questions been taken in an open press conference. Why is Modi silent? Or does he still say that no one has encroached our territory? 2/
Citizens need to know the full truth. An all party parliamentary delegation must be taken to Ladakh to independently study the situation. There must be a full debate in Parliament. Modi’s strategy is to spin half truths. There’s no real plan to deal with Chinese aggression 3/
