#Thiruvempavai#திருவெம்பாவை Tamil Nadu has given India a lot by way of Bhakti movements from time immemorial.
A short thread based on my understanding. Today also is the day of #ArudraDarshan#Thiruvadhirai - a big festival and celebration in Kerala and TN

Above image is of Brihadeeswara Temple, Tamil Nadu. It is said, having a darshan of Gopuram itself is a blessing.
Paavai Genre: Paavai songs are part of an ancient tradition amongst unmarried young girls, where they would light lamps in the early mornings of Margazhi and sing songs in praise of Bhagawan Shiva or Bhagawan Krishna (or may be both).
Thiruvempavai - 20 stanzas are sung, one on every day and then followed by the 10 songs of the Thiruppalliyezhucchi.
1st verse of Thiruvempavai starts with
"ஆதியும் அந்தமும் இல்லா அரும்பெரும் சோதியை யாம் பாடக் கேட்டேயும் வாள் தடங்கள் மாதே! வளருதியோ?".
Translated, it means, "We are singing about the great flame that has neither the beginning nor the end" referring to Bhagawan #Shiva.
What a beautiful piece - No beginning, no end - Manikka Vasagar who wrote this must have been so devoted in his prayers that he was able to visualize what #Mahadeva is!!
I wish I could tell as to when these beautiful verses were created but it appears that there are different references. I need to study and understand more on this.
It is a collection of songs composed by the poet and saint, Manikkavacakar dedicated to #Mahadev . It forms part of the collection called Thiruvasagam, and the 8th book of the Thirumurai, part of Tamil Shaiva Siddhanta.
The sages of Bhakti movement who worshipped Bhagawan Shiva are called Nayanmars and those worshipping Bhagawan Vishnu are called Azhwars. History records the story of 63 Nayanmars and their story is chronicled in a book called “Periya puranam(Big epic)” written by Chekizhar.
Among those 63 Nayanmars, 4 Nayanmars were the most important and they were Appar, Thirugnana Sambandar, Thirunavukkarsar and Manika Vasagar, each of them a great poet.
They traveled through out Tamil Nadu visiting the shiva temples and composing poems on the deities in each Temple. The work of Manika Vasagar is called as Thiru vasagam (Holy script).
It appears that Thiruvempavai was composed at Thirvuvannamalai and to the Chola King. King Raja Raja Chola, is credited with the efforts in recovering the scripts - that he embarked upon after hearing Thevaram in his court.
This led to the creation and consecration of 63 Nayanmaars after some opposition. Rajaraja came to be known as Tirumurai Kanda Cholan meaning one who saved the Tirumurai.
This is a small effort, based on my limited understanding, to understand the devotion to Bhagawan Shiva in Tamil Nadu and other states in South. Yes, by no means it is perfect but will write on it further, time permitting.
Eponym - When something is named after a person or a place or a company, we call that name an eponym. A short but interesting thread. For instance, did you know that the word sideburns is an eponym?
1. Named after Ambrose Burnside. Let's look at some examples. He was an American railroad executive, soldier, industrialist, and politician whose distinctive facial hair inspired the word sideburns.
2. Alois Alzheimer is credited with identifying "presenile dementia," which was later named Alzheimer’s disease after him. 3. Boycott is derived from an English land agent named Captain Charles C. Boycott who treated Irish badly and so was ostracized or “boycotted” by the them.
Listen to this person talking as what is UP, especially Gorakhpur before and after @myogiadityanath . His clarity is clear. Bonus the passion, the Hindi that he speaks. Video originally shared by @yoginisd . In 3 parts.
A WA forward on what #YogiAdityanath has done for UP:
Last 5 years of UP:
Expressways started in 2008 when Mayawati started constructing Yamuna Expressway connecting Noida to Agra - It was her dream project of 166 KM. That’s UP for you 👏👏
then came Akhilesh Yadav who started Lucknow Metro and did 90% work on Agra - Lucknow expressway connecting Yamuna Expressway to Lucknow of 302 KM.
Was away from Twitter as I was traveling for the past 3 weeks traveling and touching many parts of India. Every flight is full and hotels are functioning almost back to normalcy. A wonderful thing to see. A short thread on my experience. #flights@IndiGo6E
#vaccinationcertificate: When one flies into Guwahati, one has to show the Vaccination Certificate. Flying to Bangalore from Maharashtra, one has to have #RT_PCR test report. Thanks to GoI, this test now costs Rs. 600/- and in many places, it is free as well.
Flying into Mumbai from Bangalore, only #VaccinationCertificate is required. Flying into Hyderabad from Mumbai / Hyderabad also requires #VaccinationCertificate. Flying into Pune from Hyd
In the last few years, we have heard on and off of people lost, some close and personal and some celebrities who were in their 40s and died because of doing too much to be "fit".
Unfortunately while they did look fit, six packs and all, the body was not really able to keep up on the inside with the rigor of the exercise regimen.
Sadly y'day Puneeth Rajkumar also gets added to this list. A good person gone too soon, gone too young!
In anything in life, MODERATION is the mantra. Any extreme of zero or 100 is not correct. A moderate amount of exercise, just about 20-30 minutes, eating while keeping nourishment in mind.
Ironies of democracy as done in two of the largest democracies.
Democracy was defined by Abe Lincoln as, "For the people, of the people and by the people". US amended to make it, "For the business, of the business and by the business".
The current state of democracy in India is like, "Far (away) from the people, off from the people and ...buy the people".
Legislature, Executive, Judiciary and Press were supposed to be 4 pillars of democracy. -
But all the 4 have forgotten the key enablers of Democracy: People, who are responsible in reposing faith in their elected representatives by electing them and have done a splendid job. But the latter have generally been treated like dirt and with disdain.
