The #NationalityandBordersBill must be stopped. It's beyond cruel to criminalise people seeking asylum. It's state-sanctioned murder to grant immunity to border force staff if refugees die after being pushed back into French waters. 2/9
Parliament's own human rights committee has ruled that @ukhomeoffice's #BordersBill is incompatible with international law and would endanger more refugee lives at sea. It's incompatible with British decency. 3/9
The @ukhomeoffice and @pritipatel don't want to talk about why people flee their homes or the UK's historical responsibility in global displacement: our climate debt, colonialism, economic exploitation, our arms trade. The result? 4/9
More and more people around the world are losing their homes and livelihoods due to war and #ClimateEmergency. In 2019, weather-related hazards triggered over 24.9 million displacements in 140 countries around the world. Every year it’s getting worse. 5/9
By 2070, 19% of our planet surface is projected to become an uninhabitable hot zone making agriculture impossible and living conditions unbearable in many parts of Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia and Australia. 6/9
This is madness! The wealthiest 10% are responsible for over 50% of current emissions, while the poorest 50% only 7%. Wealthy nations pronounce a death sentence on the maj. of people and species on our beautiful planet, & then villify those forced to migrate 4 a better life. 7/9
Yet where they look for safety, climate migrants instead find danger, death, barricades, racism, a hostile environment by design. They are the forgotten victims of climate change, yet have done the least to cause it. 8/9
It's time for wealthy nations to accept their responsibilities. Dismantle the hostile environment. Stop the Nationality and Borders Bill. #ClimateJustice = #MigrantJustice
