We are all seeing statements circling around like; “Coronavirus is dropping emissions”, “Mother Earth is cleansing” and “Humans are the virus”, in the mainstream media and in climate activist circles.

We need to dig into what these ideas actually mean - and be clear that any claim that a global pandemic and loss of thousands of human lives is a *good* thing for the climate is far more dangerous than the virus itself.

We are living through a very scary, uncertain time, where the most vulnerable people are being exposed to huge risks and potential death.

Here at Extinction Rebellion Scotland, we tell the truth about the climate and ecological crisis. A huge part of doing that is making sure we are calling out arguments which are not only false, but put marginalised people at risk.

Any claim laying the responsibility for the climate crisis at the feet of the most marginalised is a step on the road to eco-fascism - a creeping ideology which tramples on those seen as ‘less’ in a bid to ‘save the earth’, with its roots in Nazi Germany.

Climate change is caused by our deeply unequal and destructive system which is devoted to profit for some, over the wellbeing of all - not by ordinary people struggling to survive in an unfair world.

Misleading narratives about ‘overpopulation’ can lead to the promotion of eugenics or a one-race state achieved by oppressive anti-immigration policies.

We are already seeing fascism sneak into many aspects of our lives. If we are to fight for real just change in the face of the growing climate and ecological crisis, we must be vigilant against eco-fascism.

We condemn and reject any headline or argument that sees emissions dropping as the silver lining to a pandemic killing thousands of people. This is a crisis, with side effects that can lead to change if we want it to, but all that lies in uncertainty.

For now, we will be focusing on giving our solidarity and collective action to those suffering and at the frontlines of this crisis.
