#MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race So this is Open Access. This was from the first RaceB4Race conference. But I would like to discuss the long journey this took to get published. Thread. 1/ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/17414113/2…
The conference happened in January 2019 because of Academic REJECTION. Specifically Rejected from the @KzooICMS in 2019 of all the Medievalists of Color sessions (except the one where we basically do diversity labor for white people). 2/
@acmrs_asu & @jeffreyjcohen (Dean at Humanities) invited all those rejected to present instead at a symposium at ASU that @acmrs_asu would organize. Since Ayanna Thompson had just taken over as head of @acmrs_asu, she also thought it would be a good time for coalition building 3/
and for the medievalists of color to talk to the #ShakeRace folk. I think we expected at most maybe 40-50 people including speakers. Instead, they had to move venues because 300+ signed up to show up. At the conference, several editors showed up, including the Penn editor 4/
and one of the editors for @AHAhistorians flagship journal. The AHA editor requested our talks for a roundtable for AHR. So here is point number 1. The white male editor who came to this symposium solicited the papers for AHR. He saw all the papers, he heard people introduce 5/
the panelists. So he knew it was all (or should of through the program or by listening) that we were predominately literature scholars, mostly working on England. You can ask why that is but it's fairly simple 1. the people deeply involved in doing premodern CRT & organizing 6/
medievalists of color were literature scholars (mostly working on England) and the point was to have a conversation across periods with the #ShakeRace people who had been organizing in early modern studies and especially Shakespeare studies for several decades. 7/
The papers, edited by Ayanna Thompson, went to AHR for their proposed roundtable. We were then REJECTED (again from an editor and journal who knew we were all literature scholars) from AHR because they were confused why there were no historians. 8/
So then we took the roundtable, papers were already submitted, editing had happened, etc. and proposed it for PMLA the journal of the Modern Language Association for one of their forum discussions. They REJECTED us. 9/ medium.com/the-sundial-ac…
And we've already written as well as did a topic model of their premodern author numbers to show how WHITE WHITE WHITE that part of their publishing output looked in the previous 10 years. We never did the topic model for AHR, but I expect it's the same if not worse. 10/
It has been 3 years since this initial conference. #RaceB4Race has become a research collective & conference series, a book series at Penn Press, & in the last several months was awarded a 3.2 million grant from the Mellon Foundation 11/: news.asu.edu/20210921-solut…
I am super curious AHA & MLA, what research collective that you have published in the last 10 years has done that in under 3 years. When PMLA REJECTED us, I was able to create space at Literature Compass for this special issue. I can do this b/c I am co-editor of premodern & 12/
& my co-editor and Exec. Editor have my back. These pieces were then sent out for double-blind peer-review (THANK YOU PEER REVIEWERS), and revised again. And this is now available for open access reading (I am not sure how long, so download now folks). 13/
It is a special issue w/ almost all BIPOC-identified authors & editors (Ayanna Thompson and myself). Because of how Literature Compass functions, I was able to early publish @_theBrownprint_ 's piece in 2021. It is now the most read piece in LiCO's history. 14/
So the special issue opens with Ayanna Thompson's introduction, "Rejected: Introducing the stakes of Premodern Critical Race Studies," 15/ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/li…
The next piece is my "The Politics of the Medieval PreRacial" which I suggest you read in tandem w/ my "Introduction: Critical Race and hte Middle Ages" & the Introduction to the Bloomsbury Cultural History of Race 1350-1550. 16/ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/li…
Next is @_theBrownprint_ 's article: "Hood Feminism": Whiteness and segregated (premodern) scholarly discourse in the post-postracial era. It also has a teaching guide. 17/ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/li…
The next article is Noémie Ndiaye's "Rewriting the Grand Siècle: Blackface in Early Modern France and the Historiography of Race" which I believe is part of her forthcoming Penn book 18/ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/li…
Next is @UrvashiChakrav 's "Spirited away: Race, slavery and childhood in early modern England" 19/ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/li…
@ShokoofehR 's article is next: "The Intellectual Body, the Body Intellectual" 20/ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/li…
@cmthomas is next with " Embodying Antiracist White Latinidad in Medieval Studies" 21/ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/li…
and finally @pakhimie 's article and teaching guide: "Cultivating Expertise: Glossing Shakespeare and Race" 22/ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/li…
Download everything as soon as you all can (I don't know when it will go behind the lock) and enjoy what happened at that first #RaceB4Race conference that really shifted the conversation in premodern critical race studies. Enjoy. Fin.

#AcademicTwitter #MLA2022 PSA and CW for English Department job seekers. This is a story in which I have gotten permission from the PH.D. student to share, though I am not going to mention specific names. It involves an English Dept. search for an ethnic studies candidate at 1/
a PWI and R1 institution in the Pacific Northwest. This Ph.D. candidate got an interview with the school and received an email on Dec. 7th from the department's admin. assistant to set up this interview and then a direct email on Dec. 10th from the chair of the search. 2/
Both these emails never reached the candidate because they were marked as spam. Now, this is the content warning for academic job seekers, because I am sorry that this will make you feel anxious to probably obsessively check your spam folder. The candidate did not see this 3/

Part II. Thread. Medieval White Rage & the Alt-Medieval. #MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race #LitPOC I reference Carol Anderson's work b/c she points to how far white grievance will go into violent white rage during Jim Crow & school desegregation. What will white ppl do 27/
if their white privilege & place in their world is seen as "threatened" by BIPOC ppl. They will push back but they also will go to white rage violence to stop it & the change for equity & justice. Medieval Studies has an entire alt-medieval group entirely based on white rage 28/
This next example shows how white "leftists" become radicalized into the far-right universe. Tom McMaster, a.k.a. Gay Girl in Damascus. "Amina" was seen by online activists as queer Islamic feminist activist. Of course it was a racist catfish 29/ theguardian.com/world/2011/jun…

So ppl still friends w/ this alt-medieval lot & supporting them digitally & F2F & ppl who call out trying to out pseudonymous accts as VIOLENCE, Halsall was fine violently outing MRO's previous account even though he knew about her violent stalkers. 9/
I believe PH taped me at @IMC_Leeds in 2018 since he was at both my advertised sessions. Milo wrote a 13,000 hit piece on me (a bad diss. chapter on mysticism) & released the illegal tape of me & @prof_gabriele 10/
I wrote about all of that here in 2018. One of the points I made was how this WS medieval 4chan group basically uses the tactics of the far right--11/ insidehighered.com/views/2018/08/…

#MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race #Bigger6 #BiPOC18 #VicPOC #POC19 #LitPOC Medieval White Rage. This is literally a condensed version of a chapter in my book Alt-Medieval. A book by the way that I am slowing revising b/c (since it's Mental Health Awareness Month) of PTSD 1/
I have an excellent therapist, but it's still trauma work. I discuss this in this podcast which dropped this month. So this entire alt-medieval group have their own medieval, white supremacist 4chan space called Medieval Studies: State of the Field. 2/ podcast.digitalmedievalist.org/episode-5-glob…
Paul Halsall started it b/c he couldn't stop himself from saying racist things @ me & other BIPOC medievalists in medieval FB groups. He got kicked out. The group includes Rachel Fulton Brown. Academic medievalists have been talking & liking her comments there for years. 3/

#MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race #LitPOC This is a PSA for an incident that happened earlier that smacked of some overt misogynoir. A bunch of those tweets have been erased but I am tweeting now to discuss some things related to ideas of BIPOC scholars & "rigor." 1/
#MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race #LitPOC There are certain premodern study "skills" or "areas" that white premodern studies loves to wave around as the only way to go & use it as some sort of cudgel for gatekeeping that smacks of a kind of "white premodern only" 2/
#MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race #LitPOC so people are in "shock" when premodern BIPOC scholars actually have these skills and in spades. One of them is often book history, material book culture, paleography etc. But the other one discussed is "philology". 3/

Anatomy of Disinformation (Academic, small-scale ecosystem style) A Long, long Thread. 1/
I have mostly been away from Twitter this week b/c personal/family/work stuff including looming work deadlines, end of semester teaching/meetings/etc., and now I am managing not just childcare, but eldercare, so I literally am living the Gen-X sandwich life. 2/
I am having to write this thread while still dealing w/ all this b/c apparently the way to stir up the premodern pot is to somehow announce that I am “bullying” or “harassing” someone when there is no evidence at all for it. 3/
