Some context to this tweet talking of admissions with Covid at record levels in children.

We have seen rises in cases of Covid - but the total number of children in hospital (regardless of reason) is lower than 3 weeks ago.

My recent blog explains the numbers - I need to update it this week with the latest week data.

The situation not changed much - as illustrated in chart in previous tweet.

We know up to 45% of patients of all ages are in hospital with Covid but not for it.

We don’t have the data by age group but as Covid is a virus that attacks elderly more, I would not be surprised if more younger people are in with it but not for it than the all age number.

➡️ 35 in whole of Wales with Covid on a ventilator ❌

➡️ 8 in Cardiff and Vale regardless of vaccine status

This is blatant misinformation. In England average age of unvaccinated in ICU is 50 years old, so I would like to know what is classed as ‘young’ although most of what was said was inaccurate anyway

#Covid19 cases up 20% across the UK in the past week

◾️ England up 17%
◾️ N.Ireland up 53%
◾️ Scotland up 32%
◾️ Wales up 36%

The growth in cases across all four nations is slowing down.
As I predicted last week, deaths starting to trend up with so many Omicron cases.

With more admitted with Covid but not for it deaths data will overcount the true impact of Covid on mortality from now on.

Deaths 82% lower than last year & signs starting to rise.
The number of #Covid19 patients in critical care beds in England is similar to the level just before Xmas

◾️ 22.5% of beds have a Covid-19 patient
◾️ 59.1% have non-Covid patients
◾️ 18.4% unoccupied

🚨🚨 Mark Drakeford - ‘The latest figures suggest staff absences from illness and isolation across the Welsh NHS is 8.3%’

FACT CHECK

➡️ 3.6% of staff are absent from work for Covid-19 related reasons ❌

He is including other reasons for sickness which is disingenuous
Those staff who are off sick for other reasons should not be included.

Data in England over the past month shows little difference in the numbers of staff absent for non Covid reasons.

There are more staff absent for non Covid reasons than those absent due to Covid.

🚨🚨 Covid19 cases in Wales are up 50% week on week.

Cases per 100k at record reported levels - signs the positivity rate (% of tests positive) peaking

➡️ Cases less relevant with #Omicron more transmissible - patients in intensive care up to 35 from 31 (53 unoccupied beds)
Wales - 13% increase in past week in #Covid19 patients in ventilated beds & 73% lower than last year

➡️ Patients in general beds up 89% but 60% lower than last year

Deaths linked to #Covid19 in Wales have been trending down for about 6 weeks and currently 91% lower than this time last year.

With significant rises in cases and daily figures those reported with a positive test - total deaths from all causes will be a better metric this winter

◼️ Likely we will see an increase in deaths but remember the daily deaths figures are people who die with a positive test - so need to look at total deaths to get real picture
◼️ 61% of patients in intensive care unvaccinated. If you compare two people with similar characteristics, the unvaxxed person is more likely to be admitted than the vaxxed person

Varies by age and personal characteristics. We know those who are obese are overrepresented in ICU

Both cases per 100k and the positivity rate (% of tests positive) at record reported levels.

➡️ Cases less relevant with #Omicron so much more transmissible - patients in intensive care up to 36 from 32 (55 unoccupied beds)
Wales - 14% increase in past week in #Covid19 patients in ventilated beds & 72% lower than last year
