OMG—Train collides with a crashed plane just 2 seconds after @LAPDFoothill police pull the pilot from the wreckage earlier today. The bystander who recorded this was nearly hit by large flying debris. LAPD officer’s body cam further below👇—amazing heroism 🙏
2) here is the LAPD body cam of the harrowing rescue just before the train hit.
3) I’m am curious - why didn’t the train have time to be warned to slow down? The police seemed to have had time to put up yellow police barrier tape across the street. Maybe there wasn’t a direct line to the conductor? I’m asking as a kid who grew up near train tracks.
4) Notably, when I was in middle & high school, I walked home over train tracks daily. Once, a train was parked on the track, and as we went under the train🚊—it started moving over us. We dodged out from under the train just in time before the wheels moved too fast to jump thru.
5) my friends and I had crossed under parked trains dozens of times, and didn’t think much of it. But that harrowing time—it was a sudden jolt of movement that shook the train above us, as it then proceeded to move. We froze at first…
6) But two of us had to decide quickly whether to stay under the train and lay down or whether to jump between the wheels. The trains cars carried coal and had space under—but we were worried about a rear engine train (no clearance under the train). So we decided to jump for it—
7) …we luckily jumped between the wheels before they were rolling too fast. We stood to the side of the train watching it pass…. And indeed there was a rear train engine in the caboose. So, our split second decision to jump out early was thankfully the correct decision. Whew 😰
8) when I was a kid—we lived too close to the high/middle school ‘as the crows fly’ to have school bus 🚌 service—hence we took shortcut to walk over the train tracks to save ~12 minutes. But it was a hidden trail that had no marked pedestrian crossing. Please kids don’t do it!🙏

⚠️EXCESS DEATHS in South Africa🇿🇦 are running at 130% of normal in the final 4 weeks of 2021–which translates to >10,000 excess deaths in just 4 weeks. ➡️Excess weekly deaths currently running ~3000 excess per week—SA has had large under-diagnosis like in previous waves. #Omicron ImageImage
2) to be clear on the English - “130% of normal” means 30% excess. But this is still 3000 excess per week for a population of ~60 million, which is 18% the size of the US. Not going to convert it but it’s not small. Can we please stop with the “mild”???
3) Australia also seeing surge in severe outcomes. This is not as mild as we think it will be.

Surging in NSW (Sydney region) Australia 🇦🇺:

⬆️ Cases of #COVID19
⬆️ Hospitalizations
⬆️ ICU
⬆️ On mechanical ventilators

Uncoupled? Not exactly. #Omicron Image
2) Surging #COVID19 hospitalizations and ICUs in the US as well… hospitalizations at record high in the Us now too. Image
3) What about #COVID19 deaths in a state like Illinois? This does NOT look “de-coupled” in any way. And similar parallelism between hospitalizations and deaths this wave versus summer wave. Image

NEW—Dutch🇳🇱 govt is advising *medical grade masks* be worn in busy outdoor spaces & **at all times in indoor public areas** where different households mingle—in all places where social distancing is impossible, such as shopping, markets & demonstrations.
dutchnews.nl/news/2022/01/w…
2) masks should be of type 2 medical standard rather than cloth, because these ‘offer slightly better protection against the emission of virus particles’ than non-medical masks and also offer more protection to the wearer, the OMT said.
3) Type 2 medical masks include the light blue pleated masks widely available in shops and pharmacies. Vulnerable people, however, should use a thicker FFP2 (ie KN95) medical mask when possible.

📍Finland govt is warning that #LongCovid could persist for months after an initial infection, could be emerging as a chronic disease—1 in 2 adults and ~2% of children may experience prolonged symptoms connected to #COVID19–even if mild/asymptomatic cases!
reuters.com/article/us-hea…
2) “There is a threat that Finland will see the emergence of the largest, or one of the largest, new groups of chronic diseases, and that not only too many adults will suffer from a long-term COVID-19, but at worst also children,” Kiuru said.
3) The Finnish institute of health and welfare considers an illness chronic when it has a major impact on public health and the national economy through lowered working capacity and strains on healthcare.

🏥Vaccine/booster & #Omicron-wave hospitalizations in Miami shows high hospital admissions in unvaccinated— 📌~6x more than 2-shot vaccinated, & 📌~14x more than booster vaccinated. ➡️This also means #Booster shot gives >2x more protection vs 2-shots 👀

Analysis by @DrWilliamKu
2) this matches the trend in NYC — unvaccinated hospitalizations soaring while vaccinated have much lower hospitalizations- albeit also increasing — but it’s not split by booster status in the NYC data.
3) And yes, the majority of hospitalization surge recently are for #COVID19, not just incidental infections. And even if they are incidental, hospital acquired ones are also really sad and shameful we don’t protect patients enough.

1. Ventilation & indoor air disinfection standards (key advantage—agnostic of politics/behaviors)

2. Boosters & reclassify “fully vaccinated” w/ booster.

3. N95 for all essential workers—free KN95 for public.

4. Free or $1 rapid tests.

5. Unvaxxed pay more insurance premiums.
2) The show is not over. Obviously I have more…

6. We need vaccine passports (with boosters) preferably- for both indoor activities and large gatherings.

7. Domestic air travel requires vaccine or minimum negative test 24 hours before ✈️.

8. international ✈️arrival testing!
3) This is a good point — we didn’t solve the unhygienic water by just making the world boil water. We solved it by making the water cleaner in our pipes. Hence we need to make the air more hygienic in schools and workplaces with better indoor air infrastructure!
