⚠️EXCESS DEATHS in South Africa🇿🇦 are running at 130% of normal in the final 4 weeks of 2021–which translates to >10,000 excess deaths in just 4 weeks. ➡️Excess weekly deaths currently running ~3000 excess per week—SA has had large under-diagnosis like in previous waves. #Omicron
2) to be clear on the English - “130% of normal” means 30% excess. But this is still 3000 excess per week for a population of ~60 million, which is 18% the size of the US. Not going to convert it but it’s not small. Can we please stop with the “mild”???
3) Australia also seeing surge in severe outcomes. This is not as mild as we think it will be.
4) To put this into perspective, @ZekeEmanuel & @celinegounder’s group advocated a tolerable excess death due to COVID of ~3000 deaths/week in US— thus, considering the US pop is 5.5 times larger than SA, then SA’s current excess is **5.5x higher** than their tolerable threshold.
5) here is my 5 point strategy to stop #COVID19 … when do we need it? Now!
7) the excess deaths in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa during #Omicron wave has actually now exceeded their Delta wave! samrc.ac.za/reports/report…
8) don’t just look at deaths alone— long term it will be #LongCovid that will harm more people - especially our kids. #LongCovidKids is no joke — and the official 🇬🇧 stats don’t lie!
9) South Africa is now seeing very high underdiagnosis of #COVID19 during the #Omicron wave — much higher under detection compared to any wave in the past year. I think this has contributed to people being misled about “mild”

💡HUGE—We now have evidence that Multiple Sclerosis is likely caused by an infection—notably, the Epstein-Barr virus increased risk of developing MS by a whopping **32-fold***—via Harvard epidemiology team. ➡️ Hopeful because EBV vaccine coming soon. 🧵

2) “Our data strongly suggest Epstein-Barr virus is the leading cause of multiple sclerosis,” said Kjetil Bjornevik, a research scientist at Harvard and the study’s lead author. “It was a really dramatic increase in risk that would be very hard to explain any other way.”
3) More than a decade ago, his Harvard colleague, epidemiologist Alberto Ascherio (my friend) had a hunch that the answer to what initiates MS might be frozen somewhere on the campus of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.

WATCH📺—Despite 97.5% of all adults in England🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 with antibodies to #COVID19 (via vax/infection)–hospitalizations still surging. Why? Because variants like #Omicron are adapting. Need multivalent vax, plus ➡️N95 & ventilation are agnostic to variants—key!
2) Boosters are critical, yes, but we need a higher sea wall of protection that can handle virus evolution & adaption. That’s why premium masks & ventilation & air disinfection key.

Special thanks to @theosanderson for the animation. Data via 🇬🇧 @ONS.
ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulati…
3) And we need to be honest also that vaccine boosters wane too. This figure in French from UK data shows that even boosters wane against highly evasive #Omicron 10 weeks after a booster shot -VE down to 45% for symptomatic. We need new multivalent vaccines & masks & ventilation. Image

BROKEN—trust in the @CDCgov@CDCDirector says CDC will not change recommendations to wear higher quality N95/KN95 masks. ➡️What an awful day in the pandemic & the🌎…I have more choice statements but suffice to say I am angry & disappointed beyond words.😢
thehill.com/policy/healthc… Image
3) Furthermore, @CDCDirector has the stone cold ignorant gall to claim the recent surge in US record hospitalizations is perhaps driven by Delta instead of Omicron. Like— how insane do you have to be to think that?!?

💡NEW—Vaccine efficacy 91% of 2 Pfizer shots protecting against pediatric multi system inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) in teens age 12-18. 📌Huge—this was a major severe outcome of #COVID19 in kids before. This is a reminder kids need 2 shots. #GetVaccinated cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/7… ImageImage
2) What is already known about this topic?
Vaccine effectiveness against multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), which can occur 2–6 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection, has remained uncharacterized.
3) What is added by this report?
Estimated effectiveness of 2 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against MIS-C was 91% (95% CI = 78%–97%). Among critically ill MIS-C case-patients requiring life support, all were unvaccinated.

Pandemic political profiteering by raising donations calling for “Fire Fauci” on your website is the most disgusting & depraved thing I’ve ever witnessed @RandPaul—you spit on the grave of all who who have died & spit on face of human decency @SenRandPaul.
2) Sickening is that @RandPaul once told a room full of students that “misinformation works”. And sometimes “I spread it”.

This you @SenRandPaul?

Tons of students march out in protest against #Omicron. Brooklyn Tech is the largest high school in the US 🇺🇸 - with ~6000 students in this school alone! Maybe the kids & teachers together are trying tell the at-home / studio-isolated TV pundits something about #COVID19 risk…
2) This high school is 7 floors full of students! There is “absolutely no distancing” among students in crowded classrooms and halls of this ~6000 person high school.
3) meanwhile, 65,000 students and teachers just test #COVID19 positive in LA school district in the new year. 15-16%! abc7.com/los-angeles-sc…
