2/ We have added many new and unique features, developed to reflect changes in the region since the 2020 war and to take advantage of all that graphics and data presentation in this format can do.
3/ We have introduced two new interactive maps. Developed in collaboration with external specialists, these illustrate the situation inside the #Karabakh conflict zone and along the state borders of #Armenia and #Azerbaijan.
4/ The casualties map identifies the deadliest areas along the post war front lines. The video shows how. Our data indicates that the border zone between Kelbajar and Gegharkunik regions has been the deadliest area since the 2020 war.
5/ The post war detentions map tracks detentions of both combatants and civilians. Civilian detention numbers are rare, but based on our data, civilian detentions are most common in the areas around Agdam and Goris regions.
6/ These unique maps illustrate dynamics on the front lines before and after the 2020 war, using satellite imagery, and the NKAO, as defined by Soviet-era maps. The Lachin corridor is presented as defined in current official maps published by the Russian peacekeeping mission.
7/ Our page contains many more features that should help better understand the current dynamics and compare them to the trends before the 2020 war. One of them is a chart that provides details of mine casualties. Most killed and wounded have been from the Azerbaijani side.
8/ If you compare data from before and after the 2020 war, many more civilians now die and get wounded both inside the conflict zone and along the state borders.
9/ The Visual Explainer is now available in Russian as well as English! Both will be updated simultaneously once a month. crisisgroup.org/ru/content/%D0…
1/8 Today is six months after the ceasefire in #Karabakh war. We at @CrisisGroup have been following the process of identification and reporting of casualties. You can see the most recent numbers in our visual explainer: crisisgroup.org/content/nagorn…
2/8 The current death toll is expected to rise with more identified through DNA analyses. We went through all the lists of civilian and military casualties published in coarse of the war and after it. Some names were removed, probably due to the initial mistakes in reporting.
3/8 Still difficult to say proportions between casualties from #Armenia and #Karabakh itself. Last month military in #Karabakh told me that many originally from the region were still not in the lists. Details of the reports are in this database: cutt.ly/bbO5S81
