Interim Statement on #COVID19 vaccines in the context of the circulation of the Omicron variant from the WHO Technical Advisory Group on COVID-19 Vaccine Composition bit.ly/3fg0eA0
Current #COVID19 vaccines under WHO Emergency Use Listing continue to provide a high level of protection against severe disease and death caused by all variants bit.ly/3fg0eA0
In the context of the circulation of #COVID19 Omicron variant, the WHO Technical Advisory Group on COVID-19 Vaccine Composition urges broader access globally to current vaccines, particularly for those at risk of severe disease bit.ly/3fg0eA0
The WHO Technical Advisory Group on #COVID19 Vaccine Composition is looking at whether the strain composition of the vaccines needs to be updated & encourages vaccine developers to gather and share data with WHO on this bit.ly/3fg0eA0
WHO continues to gather the evidence on #COVID19 and work with partners as more data are needed on vaccine effectiveness against new virus variants, particularly against hospitalization, severe disease and death bit.ly/3fg0eA0

A WHO stress management course, Self-Help Plus, has been shown to be effective in preventing mental disorders among refugees.
The likelihood of those who took the course having a mental disorder 6 months later was half that of those in the control arm bit.ly/3tjCmUs
The study, supported by the @EU_Commission, is the first randomized controlled trial to assess prevention of mental disorders among Syrian refugees experiencing psychological distress but without a diagnosis of a mental disorder bit.ly/3tjCmUs
The results suggest that the WHO stress management course Self-Help Plus could be scaled up as a public health strategy to prevent mental disorders in large refugee populations exposed to adversity bit.ly/3tjCmUs
The overall risk related to Omicron remains very high:
1⃣ The global risk of #COVID19 remains very high overall
2⃣ Current data indicate that Omicron has a significant growth advantage over Delta, leading to rapid spread in the community bit.ly/3suVSNn
As of 6 January 2022, the #COVID19 Omicron variant had been identified in 149 countries across all six WHO Regions bit.ly/3suVSNn
#COVID19 Omicron is spreading significantly faster than the Delta variant in countries with documented community transmission. Growth rates have declined or stabilized in many countries but remain significantly higher than for the Delta variant.
In 2021, in addition to the 🌐 #COVID19 response, WHO supported health needs of communities experiencing humanitarian crises due to conflict, climate change, & economic & political insecurity in:
🔸Afghanistan
🔸Northern Ethiopia
🔸Syria
🔸Yemen
🔸& more
WHO calls on countries to protect and preserve the health and the #HumanRights of the vulnerable in all humanitarian settings across the 🌎🌍🌏 in the New Year, and to allow safe access to care to achieve #HealthForAll.
WHO condemns any acts of violence against health care that interferes with or prohibits access to health services, especially in times of the ongoing #COVID19 pandemic. #HealthWorkers everywhere should be able to provide health care in a safe & protected environment.
