A document issued issued Jan 6 by the US Health and Human Services tells hospitals they are no longer required to report daily COVID-19 deaths to the federal government starting Feb 2.
@DataDrivenMD The HHS document calling on hospitals to end COVID-19 death reporting was published the same day as former Biden advisors published an article in @JAMA_current calling for the US government to "retire" the reporting of deaths from #COVID19
@DataDrivenMD Trump took similar actions. The House COVID Subcommittee's year-end report said "Trump Administration officials purposefully weakened CDC’s coronavirus testing guidance in August 2020 to obscure how rapidly the virus was spreading across the country." coronavirus.house.gov/sites/democrat…

Yes, prior to February 2, hospitals report BOTH directly to the federal government in the form of HHS and to the states, who then report to the federal government in the form of the CDC. But the issue is that there is a war on case/death reporting by the states.
The CDC has been in discussions with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists about a directive that “would direct states to limit daily case reporting,” according to this report in the NYT: nytimes.com/2021/12/30/us/…

@DataDrivenMD@veebee1010 So case reporting is under attack from two flanks, by the federal government and by the states. My report was on the move by the federal government, but the moves by the states and the CDC are no less important.
I think there is every cause for alarm.

You are spreading a dangerous right-wing conspiracy theory during a pandemic. You are undermining the efforts of scientists and public health experts to fight #COVID19. You help Bannon/Navarro claim it is a "weaponized virus." Just stop!
"The overwhelming number of deaths, over 75 percent, occurred in people who had at least four comorbidities," Walensky said, "so really these are people who are unwell to begin with, and yes, really encouraging news in the context of Omicron." 2/
BREAKING: White House Plans "Extreme" Rebrand for Nation's COVID Response
Acknowledging the failure of its "COVID is mild" marketing campaign, the White House said Friday it is launching a new messaging to inform the public that #COVID19 is a "f---ing rush."

"We're going from mild to wild," said CDC director Rochelle Walensky.
The White House said it is brining in a "dream team" of experts including rapper Travis Scott, Former CrossFit CEO Gregg Glassman, and Youtuber WhistlinDiesel to lead the nation's COVID response. 2/

"Young people don't want to die from something 'mild,'" said White House COVID coordinator Jeff Zients. "Polls clearly show Gen Z favors 'hot and spicy' branding for respiratory pathogens.
"If young people are going to die, they want it to be worth it," Zients said.3/
As doctors+nurses fight to save lives, a media offensive is underway to deny the severity of the pandemic, desensitize the population to mass death, claim that Omicron is “mild” and insist that nothing can be done to stop it.
In the Wall Street Journal, financial executive Rob Arnott concludes, "The prudent response to Omicron might be to encourage vaccinated people and even unvaccinated young adults to catch it." 3/

On Monday, as the US hit one million #covid19 cases, three times higher than previous waves, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up by 400 points, a new record. 1/🧵 wsws.org/en/articles/20…
Throughout 2021, as 478,000 Americans died, the Dow Jones logged 70 closing records in its third straight year of annual double-digit increases. “There were actually more new all-time highs than in the entire '70s and 2000s combined, those two decades.”

Omicron fears led to a Wall Street selloff in early December, which ended when Biden went on TV to declare that his administration is “making sure that COVID-19 no longer closes businesses or schools.” Since then, Dow is up 2k points, daily cases hit 1 million
