🚨CASE UPDATE: Last week, a federal judge approved the final Settlement Agreement and Consent Decree in Giles County, #TN ➡️ civilrightscorps.org/wp-content/upl…
This means:
🚫Giles must stop pay-only probation
🚫The county can’t collect $ from people who need gov. assistance or are indigent
🚫Giles must recall outstanding misdemeanor probation warrants
🚫 Limits enforcement of drug tests & other harsh conditions.
In 2018 we challenged Giles County’s unconstitutional private probation system and its contracts with outside companies. The companies made all of their money from the fees paid by people on misdemeanor #probation.
✖️The county must stop funding its probation system by use of fees paid by people under its supervision.
For years, Giles County & private companies profited off the backs of the poorest members of the community.
💰The county must also compensate people who were harmed by the County’s exploitative practices.
The county will waive approximately $6.5 M in misdemeanor court debts & pay $2 M total in damages & fees, including $1.68 M to almost 4,000 people.
Though the private companies left Giles County before a settlement was reached, the approval of the settlement ensures that a user-funded probation system will never return – a step towards ending the criminalization of poverty.

We have reached a historic settlement with the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office today, officially ending OPDA’s years-long use of fake subpoenas and intimidation to coerce and jail survivors & witnesses of harm. #NOLA#Louisiana
In 2017, we joined @ACLU, @ACLUofLouisiana, @VenableLLP, SilenceIsViolence, and the plaintiffs to file a lawsuit against then-DA Cannizzaro for fabricating subpoenas to force folks into out-of-court interrogations. DA Cannizzaro's office was breaking the law in #Louisiana.
OPDA even went as far as putting its official seal on them to try and trick people into thinking they were real. As a result, #Louisiana jailed people who weren’t accused of a crime for days, weeks, and even months.
NEW CASE: In Hamblen County, #Tennessee, alongside partners at @GeorgetownICAP, we are bringing a lawsuit challenging their unconstitutional money bail system. #endmoneybail#aThread (1/4)
In Hamblen County, 50% of the nearly 400 people in jail on any given day in 2019 were detained pretrial. These are legally innocent people being jailed in overcrowded and unsafe conditions due to their poverty. (2/4)
As of late 2019, the jail was operating at 172% capacity, with people sleeping chained to benches, door handles, poles, and their own wheelchairs. In the last fifteen years, the local jail population has more than doubled and the pretrial detention population has tripled. (3/4)
