We know that passing an Afghan Adjustment Act is the best way to advocate for our new #Afghan neighbors that have arrived in the United States…but what IS the Afghan Adjustment Act exactly??
🧵⤵️
Following the withdrawal from #Afghanistan, 10s of thousands of at-risk #Afghans were evacuated to the U.S. through humanitarian parole. Those individuals must now pursue a more permanent status: either asylum or #SIV status, though both are currently extremely backlogged.
The AAA would allow certain #Afghan evacuees to apply for permanent status after one year of being paroled into the country. It relieves the immediate burden on the #SIV process (18,000 case backlog) and asylum process (1 million case backlog) and prevents #Afghans paroled…
...in the U.S. from losing their jobs or being deported while their applications for these statuses are pending. And we know the United States can do this, because 👏this 👏has👏been👏done👏before👏
Congress has passed similar legislation after several U.S.-involved conflicts or humanitarian crises in the past. 3 noteworthy examples occurred following Fidel Castro’s rise to power in Cuba, after America’s withdrawal from Vietnam, and following U.S. military actions in Iraq.
After these conflicts, Congress passed adjustment acts that granted Cubans, Southeast Asians, and Iraqis who had entered the U.S. as non-immigrants or parolees the opportunity to adjust to permanent status.
It's been done before. It's time to do it again and pass the AAA.
#Veterans know that passing the Afghan Adjustment Act is what we need to do to fulfill the promises we made to the #Afghan people. We owe them a debt of gratitude. These are our allies, our neighbors, our friends. Now we must stand by them & #welcome them home. #Advocate4Afghans
