[THREAD] 2 years ago today, @POTUS announced that the U.S. would withdraw its military from #Afghanistan.

He did so fully knowing that at-risk Afghans were stuck in the visa backlog. When the withdrawal was complete, the majority of #AfghanAllies had been left behind.
Last week, the WH released a report acknowledging that evacuations should have begun sooner.

That report confirms what #Afghans and advocates predicted and have long known -- that the U.S. did too little too late to get at-risk Afghans to safety.
For years, processing delays kept #SIV applicants from resettling in the United States. A U.S. court ruled in 2019 that the delays were unreasonable.

Today, @HouseForeign & @HouseForeignGOP's "During and After the Fall of Kabul" hearing will focus on our withdrawal from #Afghanistan.

Follow along with us here ⤵️🧵
Background: After 20 years in #Afghanistan, the U.S. ended our military presence in August 2021. The Taliban quickly took over the country & rapidly eroded gains made by the Western-backed #Afghan government in the past twenty years. 82,000 #Afghans were evacuated into the U.S.
Today, we’ll hear from veterans @PeterLucier from @teamamrelief, @FQhoang from @AlliedAirlift21, Aidan Gunderson, Sgt Tyler Vargas-Andrews, and @RooftopLeader from @TForcePineapple, as well as immigration expert @cmackler from @immigrantarc.

We know that passing an Afghan Adjustment Act is the best way to advocate for our new #Afghan neighbors that have arrived in the United States…but what IS the Afghan Adjustment Act exactly??

🧵⤵️
Following the withdrawal from #Afghanistan, 10s of thousands of at-risk #Afghans were evacuated to the U.S. through humanitarian parole. Those individuals must now pursue a more permanent status: either asylum or #SIV status, though both are currently extremely backlogged.
The AAA would allow certain #Afghan evacuees to apply for permanent status after one year of being paroled into the country. It relieves the immediate burden on the #SIV process (18,000 case backlog) and asylum process (1 million case backlog) and prevents #Afghans paroled…

BREAKING from #Afghanistan: While the Biden administration claims to be ramping up evacuations, military evacuations are getting cancelled.

One of our #SIV clients just had his flight to safety cancelled with the following note:
"Due to present security conditions, we are unfortunately unable to offer you relocation on this flight. Please DO NOT report to the airport. Continue to shelter in place. We will maintain your information on record and seek to offer you relocation options as soon as possible."
The security of our Afghan allies grows more dire by the hour.

The Biden administration needs to get as many people as possible on planes before it is too late. #SaveOurAllies

7 years ago today, @JanisShenwary and I joined our friends in Congress to announce the Afghan Allies Protection Extension Act of 2014. It has been used to keep the Afghan SIV program alive ever since.

Little did we know at that time just how much more work we’d have to do. We’re still not there yet. Now is our most desperate hour.
We need your help. Please contact your member of Congress and President Joe Biden. Urge them to support an immediate air evacuation of our #Afghan wartime allies to #Guam. #SaveOurTerps #SaveTheSIV #SIV #SaveThem #WartimeAllies #Interpreters

With today’s news that the US will withdraw all of its forces from #Afghanistan by September 11, we must begin the immediate evacuation of our Afghan wartime allies (interpreters, engineers, aid workers, etc.). When we leave, the Taliban will slaughter our friends with impunity.
When collapse occurs in Afghanistan, it will engender a rapid evacuation that, given Afghanistan’s unique place in the world and our geopolitical relations with its neighbors, must occur via air.
There are four, maybe five airfields in all of Afghanistan that will be able to handle the airlift needed to rapidly evacuate our own personnel and absolutely must have equipment.

@jeffsessions & his Nazi aid #StephenMiller personally helped keep out thousands of #Afghan & #Iraqi #interpreters who were later murdered by the very enemies we asked them to help us fight or died drowning in the Mediterranean or Adriatic Sea. #SIV #NOLBMoralObligation #NOLB
As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee @jeffsessions oversaw all immigration legislation before the Senate. He & his Nazi aid #StephenMiller, who advised him on matters of immigration, made sure that any time we asked for more visas we were denied or fought at every turn.
Once Nazi #StephenMiller was in the White House he went about dismantling the Special Immigration Visa #SIV program. He forced out all of its advocates in government and installed sycophants who did his bidding. Tens of thousands have suffered under his cruel rule.
