good morning! Happy Sunday☀️this week on #Insiders are Guardian Aus politics corro Sarah Martin; Sat Paper politics corro Karen Middleton; and ABC politics editor Andrew Probyn.
The interview is with Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews.
This thread is not fact checked.
opening spiel : a hypocrite a liar a horrible person and a liar are “savage character assessments of the prime minister” says Speers.
What’s the Morrison perspective, skip? Well, it was meant to be the week of government re-set #Insiders
ministers insisted the prime minister is a fine fellow, Speers tells us, omitting the crucial detail - they spoke to how he treats his ministers, not the contempt he displays to the electorate or cruelty to entire population sectors. #Insiders
rather than front up to explain himself, the Deputy Prime Minister has pulled out of his scheduled #Insiders interview (which will not go down well with journalists scorned - Ed).
the montage provides plenty of poor Scott framing. The disgraced politics professor and murdoch columnist gets a run. Morrison pretending he has had a tuff week does too #Insiders
#MakingNews is Massola on Joyce and Campbell on tourism. Speers then editorialises on Joyce. Both men are damaged, claims Speers, in “another hit the government can not afford” - journalistic voice from nowhere: the “hit” came from inside the Coalition #Insiders
first up is Probyn on the text sent to Brittany Higgins. He does not contextualise the male violence central to her public presence. On Joyce, Middleton says we should ask ourselves if we change our judgement of the boss when we get a promotion lol #Insiders
having name-checked Massola and Campbell already, Speers gives a shout out to Smethurst to flick to Martin who cites someone (I missed who sorry) saying that Morrison “could enter a revolving door after you and come out first”. #Insiders
Martin ticks off a long list of Morrison’s many character failings, the L word (as Speers calls the known proven fact that Morrison tells lies), mentions the French President, and Speers plays footage of Joyce ponderously explaining his supposed change of heart #Insiders
will voters respond to the revelation that Morrison’s colleagues hate his guts [paraphrased]? Speculate speculate. Probyn dutifully makes evidence-free claims about “voters” and Speers swings back to what “ministers” think. #Insiders
the #Insiders goss is that there are National Party politicians who do not want Morrison campaigning in their electorates in the election that has not been called but the press gallery has been normalising expensive, publicly funded constant campaigning all year. #Insiders
Martin says never say never and he will keep campaigning and Speers repeats the media-generated metric about Morrison’s supposed skills (pre-planned stunts amplified by the press) and Middleton says trust is more important than likeability. #Insiders
fact check: Morrison is unlikeable and untrustworthy. #Insiders
clip of Albanese to segue to the interview with Andrews. He calls out Joyce for chickening out of the #Insiders interview. Has Karen had a gutful of mopping up after the blokes? She laughs prettily as women are expected to do. #Insiders
have you ever known Scott Morrison to tell a lie? Apparently Andrews has missed every lie Morrison has told in his 15 years as an MP. Speers is enabling the way Morrison treats his colleagues frame here. The issue is how he treats THE PUBLIC. #Insiders
the minister has her set piece tuff time lines ready to go. For once, the interrupting Speers technique is effective. Yes yes we will get to that, he says. But about Scott Morrison being a liar? Tuff times tuff times, Labor Labor, says Andrews #Insiders
it is your own colleagues’ character assessment if the Prime Minister, says Speers, not Labor. He apologises for interrupting lmao and asks if the Morrison campaign mythology can be sustained this time round [paraphrased]? Different times, tuff times, she recites. #Insiders
aged care. They are doing “everything” they can to “bring in the workforce that is needed” says the minister, a lie. The Morrison government has not tried - hold on to your hats - supporting the $5 wage increase. #insiders
something something Defence forces. This is the Home Affairs minister. Not health. Not aged care. Not Defence.
We are still cycling through this denial-crisis-stingy inadequate spending announcement-Defence force school of Morrison crisis mismanagement. #Insiders
okay, portfolio questions. Tourism? Will tourists be subject to the #Novax treatment? People have to prove they are double vaxxed to enter the country, says Andrews. Can you guarantee open borders? asks Speers. She was keen to re-open BuT 0MiCR0n, Andrews says. #Insiders
your predecessor Peter Dutton released a group of refugees saying it is cheaper to keep people in the community than in hotels. Why can’t the [medevac] refugees be in the community, instead of in hotels? #Insiders
we are in the stages of determining how these people will be re-settled, says Andrews. (We are talking about people detained for 9 years here.) why some but not others? asks Speers. She is “comfortable with some people” being detained in community says the Minister. #Insiders
violent extremists? Is it helpful to have your colleague George Christensen live-streaming violent extremists to his followers? Up to him, of course. Andrews says nobody could call her colleague, LNP MP, a member of the group he literally hangs out with and promotes. #Insiders
back to panel. Refugees in hotels. Middleton says “the government wants to set an example to people” and that even those voters for whom locking up refugees “resonates” are starting to get “uncomfortable” with it. #Insiders
fact check: Island prisons are constitutive of the nation state.
aged care crisis. Clip of Morrison saying crisis. Martin says we knew the workforce was in crisis before the pandemic, we know from the Royal Commission what structural changes are needed, the $800 (paid VIA BOSSES) is “a drop in the ocean” says Martin #Insiders
the government is not supporting a wage rise for aged care workers, says Martin, and they can get higher pay working at Bunnings. Speers canvases the idea that we, the public, should pay a levy for the disastrous profiteering model created by Liberal Party politicians. #Insiders
those of us who don’t die young will get old, says Middleton. She summarises the “palliative” and “end of life” framing the Health minister uses so offensively. That may be a fair point, says Middleton, but it sounds to some people like the government don’t care. #Insiders
witches brew, says Probyn, citing Dutton, on the way public policy has to “balance” the high vulnerability of aged care residents and visits from family. Probyn expresses sympathy for Peter Dutton, twice, and the “policy riddle” #Insiders
#NPC commentary opens with more poor Scott nonsense. Sucker punch. Punching bag. Visibly drained. Everyone had a crack. The disgraced professor gets another mention. Martin then claims the press gallery hold Morrison to account. #Insiders
Martin describes the mea culpa media round Morrison did the day after the #NPC and Speers pushes his “too much optimism” line with a clip of Morrison in phoney teary mode. That’s called political management David says Andrew. #Insiders
he has a couple of announcement that “all got lost” Speers puts to Middleton. By “lost”, Speers is describing choices made by political journalists and newsroom editors. #Insiders
he had to reach a lot of different audiences, says Middleton, with that speech. She adds that the press ask tuff questions of oppositions too. This third person discussion of the press gallery by press gallery members is a bit too insidery even for #Insiders imo.
I missed the next comment from Martin but we have moved on to the pro-discrimination bill. Probyn blames Labor - for a pet Morrison pentecostal project. He points out the problem with overriding state anti-discrimination law. #Insiders
we should not have any sympathy for the government on this, says Probyn, because it was an election promise and trey have had 3 years and should not be tabling it *at the fag end* of this term. Speers jumps across to the opposition position on a government announcement #Insiders
asked to run thru the timing of Labor announcing support for a government announcement on the day of Morrison’s #NPC speech. She says three seats are in play in the region. #Insiders
correction, it was Martin who was asked to comment on the Labor Hunter Valley announcement timing. #Insiders
#TalkingPictures is up. Cartoonists like the loaf of bread thing lol #Insiders
Cath Wilcox is a classy Mr Speers laydee #Insiders
#FinalObservations 1 is Martin on Dutton on China #Insiders
#FinalObservations 2 is Probyn whining that McGowan has public health settings aimed at minimising transmission, disease burden, and death [paraphrased] #Insiders
#FinalObservations 3 is Middleton very pointedly asking what happened to the claimed ethos of expecting ministers to drive policy and matching accountability of ministers to their policy development decisions👏🏼👏🏼#Insiders
the outtakes are politicians talking about what bread and milk they buy #insiders
who was that offering to “make damper for you mob” lol very generous😇the voice is familiar but I didn’t look up in time #Insiders
this has been another edition of watching #Insiders so you don’t have to👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼

hey remember when Sarah Ferguson got a promotion to cover the 6 Jan insurrection after promoting one of its key protagonists on an apparently serious Australian investigative journalism show.
journalism loves rich white males with incumbent power, episode infinity.
literally impossible to picture #NPC giving a platform to anyone who would represent the progressive equivalent of a Clive Palmer. Where are the invites to BLM folks and unemployment activists?

not making nice is dangerous and costly. Hell hath no fury like a powerful male defending male power scorned etc etc theshot.net.au/general-news/u…
one of the worst things about the Canberra press gallery is their collective and complete disinterest in developing even a basic level of feminist literacy.
I mean promoting sympathy and underdog feels for incumbent tory power is just revolting. But even the ones who try and critique prime stuntclown invariably reproduce orthodox patriarchal and colonial frames and narratives in their work.

so many deaths especially in aged care homes are a problem *for the Morrison government* which was apparently “too optimistic”. Also Liberal Party politicians feel sad about maybe losing power this year.
lmao the poor Scott narrative which was kicked off by Murphy last week by elevating a view expressed by one white male blue collar voter is gathering speed with press gallery sympathisers👏🏼 Image
pretty funny* that Morrison is so desperate he is already pivoting to underdog comms and the press gallery bless ‘em are right there alongside him to kick Liberal Party #CampaignComms along in an election year.

seems journalists can not recall the RBA dropping interest rates since the first Abbott Hockey budget tanked our post-GFC recovery, and throughout the Turnbull and Morrison governments, because Coalition economic management is so bad.
long before the pandemic, the RBA Governor was trying to save garbage Coalition fiscal policy from itself - mountains of debt, eye-watering waste, austerity budgets - by dropping interest rates to stimulate the becalmed economy.
press gallery journalists, who understand next to nothing about macroeconomics or any economic theory, out here amplifying political lies about what conclusions one can surely draw from a possible future minuscule interest rate correction.

good morning☀️happy new year! This week on #Insiders are Guardian Politics editor Katharine Murphy, 9fax (AFR) correspondent Phil Coorey and Perth radio host and columnist Gareth Parker.
The interview is with Labor leader Anthony Albanese.
opening spiel: speculative claim about omicron wave, statement that “political bruises remain”.
What’s the Morrison government perspective, skip?
Well, it “wasn’t the summer we hoped for, especially for the government”. #Insiders
montage is politicians and journalists on omicron. The Albanese line about being easier to get covid that rapid antigen tests gets a run. So does Chalmers locating responsibility where it belongs. #Insiders

journalists stop amplifying what politicians say about a virus challenge 2022.
seems the political - and false - claims about omicron made by Barnaby Joyce and Scott Morrison and Dominic Perrottet are causing low uptake of booster shots.
who could have predicted that Coalition politicians naturalising characteristics that are a function of public health settings would cause more transmission, infection, and deaths. Or as they call it, “risk”.
